Indication

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections: Mild to moderate infections from Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or Haemophilus influenzae (requires sulfonamide use) Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Mild to moderate infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or Streptococcus pyogenes Listeriosis: Caused by Listeria monocytogenes Pertussis: Caused by Bordetella pertussis; effective in eliminating the organism and may help in prophylaxis for exposed individuals Mycoplasma Pneumoniae: Respiratory infections due to this organism Skin Infections: Mild to moderate infections caused by Streptococcus pyogenes or Staphylococcus aureus (risk of resistant strains). Diphtheria: Infections due to Corynebacterium diphtheriae, used with antitoxin to prevent carriers Erythrasma: Treatment for infections due to Corynebacterium minutissimum Syphilis: Alternative treatment for primary syphilis in penicillin-allergic patients; spinal fluid exams recommended before and after treatment. Intestinal Amebiasis: Caused by Entamoeba histolytica (oral erythromycins only; extraenteric amebiasis requires other treatments) Acute Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: Caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae; uses erythromycin lactobionate followed by oral erythromycin for penicillin-allergic patients Chlamydia trachomatis Infections: Includes conjunctivitis in newborns, pneumonia in infancy, and urogenital infections during pregnancy; erythromycin as an alternative when tetracyclines are contraindicated Nongonococcal Urethritis: Caused by Ureaplasma urealyticum; treated with erythromycin when tetracyclines are not tolerated Legionnaires' Disease: Potentially effective treatment for Legionella pneumophila despite limited clinical data
