- Infections Treated:
- Infections caused by Bartonella, Klebsiella, and Escherichia coli.
- Relapsing fever, chancroid, plague, tularemia, cholera, and brucellosis (with streptomycin).
- Inclusion conjunctivitis and non-gonococcal urethritis from Ureaplasma urealyticum or Chlamydia trachomatis.
- Lymphogranuloma venereum, psittacosis, and trachoma due to Chlamydia trachomatis.
- Respiratory infections from Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
- Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, Q fever, and other tick-related fevers.
Gram-Negative Bacteria: Effective against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Haemophilus influenzae.
Gram-Positive Bacteria: Treats upper respiratory infections and skin infections from Staphylococcus aureus (not the first choice).
Alternatives to Penicillin: Used when penicillin is not suitable for gonorrhea, syphilis, listeriosis, anthrax, and certain infections caused by Clostridium species.
Other Uses: May be used for severe acne and as an adjunct in acute intestinal amebiasis.
Meningococcal Carriers: Prescribed to eliminate Neisseria meningitidis from carriers; testing is essential before treatment
