  • Is David Attenborough Vegan?

If the Earth cannot support billions of meat-eaters as Sir David Attenborough claims, it begs the question: Does he eat meat or does he practice what he preaches? David Attenborough, the world-renowned broadcaster and naturalist, released his new documentary on Netflix earlier this month titled A Life on Our Planet . This documentary focuses on all the wonders Attenborough has seen in his career, the destruction our planet has faced from human impact, and an offer of hope for steps to correct our current trajectory to save our planet. While documentaries have a harder time reaching a younger audience, David Attenborough recently launched his own Instagram page to target this younger demographic. In his first video he said, “I’m making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me because, as we all know, the world is in trouble…” A Deeper Look into the Man Behind A Life on Our Planet In the documentary, Attenborough explores the environmental repercussions of a meat-based diet. In an interview with the Radio Times magazine, he stated, “The planet can’t support billions of meat-eaters. If we all ate only plants, we’d need only half the land we use at the moment.” However, this begs the question: Is David Attenborough vegan? “The planet can’t support billions of meat-eaters. If we all ate only plants, we’d need only half the land we use at the moment.” Attenborough has said he does not eat red meat. He claims that this is perhaps due to his subconscious sending warning signals about the current state of our planet. That being said, he does still eat chicken and fish. Cutting out red meat is already a huge step for our environment. It takes 2,400 gallons of water to produce a pound of steak , compared to 468 gallons of water to produce a pound of chicken. Furthermore, 60 percent of the mass of animals on Earth is taken up by animals we raise to eat: Us humans have really messed up the food chain. David ends the show by pointing out that the planet can’t sustain seven billion humans all eating meat, and that going veggie really will save the planet. Taking Animal-Free Steps for the Environment Since the majority of the world eats a meat-rich diet, if everyone took small steps to slowly cut meat out of their diet, we could see drastic improvements to our environment. Vegan living is the ultimate goal, and veganism is a realistic and achievable step many can take now to correct climate change. It can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our carbon footprint coupled with health benefits, but it definitely comes with its challenges. While meat substitutes and dairy alternatives have become more and more frequent, other aspects of vegan living can be much harder to come by, such as animal-free medicine and supplements. Pill Clarity strives to support the vegan lifestyle by providing a carefully crafted animal-free marketplace where users can shop worry-free and with the comfort of knowing that they are helping to correct the Earth's current dire path. • Top 5 Takeaways from Dr. Fuhrman’s Nutritarian Diet

As an avid learner of nutritional science, Dr. Fuhrman found his calling: help people take critical steps in reshaping their diet to avoid or even reverse chronic medical conditions and live a happier and healthier life. Dr. Fuhrman coined the term “Nutritarian” to describe a nutrient-rich diet filled with antioxidants that promotes life longevity, weight loss, and cancer prevention. As an author of seven New York Times best-seller books and hundreds of TV and radio appearances , Dr. Fuhrman’s Nutritarian diet is widely regarded as a sustainable life-changing approach to eating. The Nutritarian diet is intended to maximize nutrient intake per calorie through clean, plant-based eating by emphasizing vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and whole grains. Interested in learning more? Check out Dr. Fuhrman's TEDx talk and check out our summary below! 1. The standard American diet consists mainly of processed food and animal products which can lead to chronic diseases and a weak immune system. About three-fourths of the U.S. population have an eating pattern that is low in vegetables, fruits, dairy, and essential oils. Our busy “on-the-road” lifestyles have led to a reliance on processed foods (over half of what we eat!) that have a poor nutrient-to-calorie ratio. 2. The Nutritarian diet naturally eliminates cravings for that midnight snack and unhealthy processed foods, completely redefining what a “diet” can be. Many diets struggle to maintain lasting impact. As individuals become less and less reliant on these unhealthy processed foods and animal products by switching to this new way of eating, the body naturally adjusts to this new eating pattern and eliminates these cravings. 3. Nutritarians focus their diet on G-BOMBS. G-BOMBS: Green, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, Seeds. Dr. Fuhrman refers to these foods as the “immune system special forces”. These foods can inhibit fat storage in the body, leading to possible cancer prevention and prolonged lifespan. 4. The Nutritarian diet is simple, accessible, and affordable. Starting a nutritarian diet only requires 4 easy steps: eat your G-BOMBS, eat only at mealtimes, say no to processed and sugar-laden foods, and replace one meal a day with a salad. Whole foods, especially vegetables and grains, are easily found in grocery stores and cost less than their processed counterparts. 5. Being Nutritarian is more than a short-term diet...it’s a lifestyle. Dr. Fuhrman emphasizes that this approach to eating isn’t about the food, it is about how it can change the lives of the people eating this way. While at its core, it is a diet, those on this journey recognize life-changing shifts from an abundance of natural energy, looking and feeling better, and little to no ailments. While these changes are easy to notice, the Nutritarian diet also boasts cancer prevention and life longevity. While a Nutritarian diet has helped many reverse their chronic illnesses, Dr. Fuhrman argues that it can and should be used as a preventative measure to avoid having to deal with such struggles. If one can sustain an animal-free and clean diet, they can be proactive about their health, rather than reactive by relying on medication to temporarily relieve symptoms. To fulfill this new approach to eating an animal-free and unprocessed diet, there arises a new, unmet need for clean, animal-free supplements and medications. Animal products can be found in a myriad of items in the typical bathroom medicine cabinet. Pill Clarity offers a wide variety of animal-free products alongside an animal-free certification to easily spot medications and supplements that are conducive to this plant-based lifestyle. • Why Are Horseshoe Crabs in the Coronavirus Vaccine?

Did you know that horseshoe crabs are a mainstay in vaccine development? The new coronavirus vaccines will be no exception. Vaccine developers use limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), an enzyme extracted from the blood of Atlantic horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus), to test for bacterial endotoxins in vaccines. Endotoxins are extremely dangerous to humans, causing fevers and even death, regardless of whether the bacteria producing them have been killed ( Gorman, 2020 ). How is the blood extracted from horseshoe crabs? Every year, pharmaceutical companies collect horseshoe crabs from their habitat, extract their blood from a vein located near their hearts, and release them back into the ocean. In 2018 alone, biomedical facilities collected 464,482 crabs for blood extraction. This "catch and release" procedure claims to protect horseshoe crab populations, but recent estimates show that about 30% of horseshoe crabs die from this extraction , pushing Atlantic horseshoe crabs closer to endangered species status. According to the Wetlands Institute , Delaware Bay’s Horseshoe Crab population has declined by 90% over the last 15 years. Enter rFC: a new test for vaccine endotoxin testing In 2016, scientists discovered an alternative test for the blood , known as rFC (recombinant factor C), which was approved for use in Europe. Certain drug companies in the United States also began using the alternative. However, in June, the company behind the approval of rFC, U.S. Pharmacopeia, announced that rFC required much more study before it could be used. Representatives from the company state that rFC only has 2 years of data, compared to 30 years for LAL, rFC requires more information before widespread use. This decision will likely delay the usage of rFC by about 3 to 4 years, according to Dr. Jay Bolden, a biologist with Eli Lilly, a company aimed to replace animal use and reduce costs. What's next for vaccine testing? The debate of LAL vs. rFC is crucial during the development of new coronavirus vaccines. A new strain of vaccines has increased the demand for LAL, and billions of doses would require testing for endotoxins, putting horseshoe crab populations at risk. Horseshoe crabs are an essential part of the Atlantic shore ecosystem, and several shorebirds depend on horseshoe crab eggs for nutrition. Unfortunately, regulatory approval for rFC continues to drown in bureaucratic red tape. However, there are ways to support the horseshoe crab population. Find out more at the Wetlands Institute . • Are medications halal?

What is halal and how does it apply to medicine? Halal is a term designating any object or an action which is permissible to use or engage in, according to Islamic law. ( Islamic Council of Victoria ) The Qur'an outlines what is halal (permitted) and haraam (prohibited) in a Muslim lifestyle. Halal and haraam are most commonly used when referencing diet, cosmetics, personal care and hygiene, pharmaceuticals, and food contact materials. For a product to be considered halal, the consumer must consider not only the ingredients that make up the product but how the product is produced and processed. By definition, halal foods are... Free from any component that Muslims are prohibited from consuming according to Islamic law (Shariah). Processed, made, produced, manufactured and/or stored using utensils, equipment and/or machinery that have been cleansed according to Islamic law. In Muslim culture, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, allowing them to continue their ministry and " contribute their knowledge and effort for the welfare of the society ." A halal lifestyle is an extension of prayer. A Hadith , a collection of traditions containing sayings of the prophet Muhammad, says that a person's prayer will be rejected if they consumed Haraam food. What ingredients are not halal? The following foods are prohibited (*May be consumed if derived from Halal animals): Alcoholic drinks and intoxicants Non-Halal Animal Fat Enzymes* (Microbial Enzymes are permissible) Gelatin* – from non-Halal source (fish gelatin is Halal) L-cysteine (if from human hair) Lard Lipase* (only animal lipase need be avoided) Non-Halal Animal Shortening Pork, Bacon / Ham and anything from pigs Unspecified Meat Broth Rennet* (All forms should be avoided except for plant / microbial / synthetic – rennet obtained from halal slaughtered animal is permissible). Stock* (a blend of mix species broth or meat stock) Tallow* (non-Halal species) Carnivorous animals, birds of prey and certain other animals Foods contaminated with any of the above products It is important to note that any food that is from an unknown or questionable source is considered haraam. A common example is gelatin. Gelatin is usually made from cows and pigs, but that is not always the case. The ambiguity of the source of gelatin ingredients makes gelatin prohibited. Click HERE for more information about how Gelatin is made and sourced . Life is Sacred Islam holds all life in high regard. Thus, how an animal's life ends is very important. Animals should only be killed for human survival. Just before the animal is slaughtered, the term bismillah, which translates to 'in the name of God', must be used. Muslims cannot eat an animal that is slaughtered in the name of any other god or in the absence of God's name. There are very specific precepts that must be followed during the slaughter of the animal. These rules are in place to ensure a painless death. Read HERE for more information about that process . Halal and Animal-Free While halal does not require an animal-free lifestyle, the lack of wide-spread halal certified food often makes it easier to simply abstain from products with animal-derived ingredients. Despite the fact that Muslims make up a quarter of the world's population, outside of Muslim countries it is difficult to find halal pharmaceuticals. A study conducted in 2013 found that 63 of 221 products were suitable for halal status. Not all of the 63 products were certified halal, though, creating ambiguity for consumers. Animal-free pharmaceuticals remove the guesswork from the equation when halal certifications aren't available for particular products. While not all Muslims are vegans, when eating out or choosing pharmaceuticals, going with an animal-free or vegan option is the safest route to avoid consuming haraam products. Veganism and Halal: An On-Going Conversation There is a lot of controversy in the Muslim community around abstaining from meat. As Mara, a Muslim and vegan from Birmingham, explained , "Some I know would say to me, 'The prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, ate meat, so why are you rejecting it? Are you saying he's wrong?' "But what I say back to them is that if they did their research, the prophet Muhammad's diet was 90% plant-based and he lived largely on dates and barley. He very rarely ate meat." There is a growing trend of younger generation Muslims adopting an animal-free lifestyle. Their reasons vary from animal cruelty and environmentalism to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Sayful Ahmed, an imam who leads the prayers at the Islamic Centre in Scunthorpe, summed up his thoughts on veganism . "If the question is, is a Muslim doing something wrong and against their religion if they choose to only eat a plant-based diet? The answer is simply, not at all," he tells me. "The requirement in Islam is that what you eat must be halal and tayyub (Arabic for wholesome and pure). A vegan diet is both of those things." How do we make it better? Muslim culture and religion is rich, enjoying a long history. However, Christian countries have historically viewed Islamic culture with suspicion and fear. According to Dr. Allen Palmer , "t h e clash that arises from conflicting world views leaves emotional and psychological scars. Among recent migrants to Europe and North America, many Muslims agree with American Islam scholar Yvonne Haddad (1991) in their “frustration and dismay as they continue to experience prejudice, intimidation, discrimination, misunderstanding, and even hatred” (p. 3). Yet, in the midst of these uncertain encounters, Islam and Western society are finding ways to adapt, if incompletely, to each other’s worldviews and values." It is not the place of Western medicine to dictate diet and lifestyle. Rather, it is important to respect Muslim views and priorities . From internal discussions of veganism to animal-free medications, the role of the Western world is to accommodate their needs. As Dr. Palmer concluded, "Even though tensions are not entirely resolved, the promise of mutual understanding is making inroads in the uncertain relations between Islam as one of the world’s great religious traditions, and the predominantly Christian West." • World Clean-Up Day 2020

Every year, Let's Do It World organizes and celebrates World CleanUp Day on the third Saturday of September. It is a day that promotes volunteerism and clean up events around the nation, gathering over 2 million volunteers in 2019 (National CleanUp Day, 2020)! Many volunteer events focus on beach and waterway clean up. This year World CleanUp Day falls on Saturday, September 19th. Why is World CleanUp Day important? Mismanaged trash can easily travel through rivers and oceans, and often accumulates on beaches and coastal environments. Trash has habitat, chemical, and biological impacts on the environment. Many of these impacts are caused mostly by plastic trash and the toxic chemicals it contains. As trash accumulates in the environment, habitat structures are often altered, especially in rivers and oceans. Oxygen levels are depleted, and light levels can be reduced in underlying waters (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2020). These changes directly affect species that are dependent on these environments for shelter and food. Bioaccumulative and toxic contaminants, such as PCBs and pesticides, also accumulate from plastic aquatic trash. In fact, “aquatic plastic debris has been found to accumulate contaminants at concentrations that are orders of magnitude (thousands to millions of times) greater than the surrounding environment!” (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2020). Plastics are able to absorb dangerous chemicals from the environment, introducing contaminants into the food chain and to humans who eat seafood. Contaminants from plastic can also be released to the environment as plastic breaks down, resulting in ultraviolet radiation and weathering. Aquatic plastic debris also has negative biological consequences, especially on marine organisms. It has been found that plastic has harmfully affected about 267 species globally, “including 86% of sea turtles, 44% of seabirds, and 43% of marine mammals,” (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2020). These wildlife are mainly affected by ingestion of debris and entanglement, as well as ingestion of contaminants from plastic particles. It is thus now more important than ever to care for the environment and species harmed by the toxic waste we produce. What are your plans for World CleanUp Day today? • No Frills Cosmetics: Now Certified Animal-Free!

📸matt_thornhill_photography One of our favorite parts of Pill Clarity is meeting inspirational people who are committed to an animal-free world. Our newest friend is Ann Mason, founder of No Frills Cosmetics, based in Cornwall, England. Ann was inspired to create No Frills Cosmetics during her fight with breast cancer. We are truly inspired by her, and we are so glad to introduce her to you all! No Frills is now Certified Animal-Free! Pill Clarity has certified all moisturizers, bath salts, and facial oils in the line. We are in love with these products and hope you love them too! You can find these products for sale at www.nofrillscosmetics.co.uk . All of the plastic containers are recyclable and reusable, and she also has optional aluminum tins if requested. Want to know more about the woman behind the brand? We sat down with Ann to bring you the full story of No Frills! Tell us more about the journey that led to launching No Frills Cosmetics. This venture started when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Whilst undergoing Chemotherapy I was advised not to use any products on my skin that contained perfumes as my skin would be very sensitive. Being naturally inquisitive I researched as much as I could and became aware that some ingredients used in products used on the skin can be absorbed, and I came to the conclusion that ‘natural’ products would be best for me. There are a lot of natural products on the market but they are often expensive. Having been involved in manufacturing for over 30 years I had a light bulb moment and thought, "I can make that myself." Tell us more about your manufacturing background! I am a registered pharmacy technician and have a diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Assurance. My "day job" is as Deputy Production Manager in an NHS Manufacturing Unit producing pharmaceutical products. I have manufactured external products including creams, ointments, lotions and potions. I have transferred these skills to natural moisturiser, but of course it is all a learning experience with different ingredients and different regulations to work with. What was the process of creating the products? Are they made locally? My creative process has included reading and digesting the European Cosmetic Regulations (no mean feat!) which includes information about Good Manufacturing Practice, what ingredients can be used and in what percentage, labelling and safety assessments. I have produced a technical file with all the necessary information including worksheets and labels. My moisturiser has a safety assessment and a preservative challenge test and is registered on the European Cosmetics Portal. This may not sound creative but is necessary for user safety. The best and most creative bit is making the product and the lovely aroma of essential oils. I manufacture my moisturiser myself, locally in Cornwall. Are you planning to add any more products to your range? My aspirations are to have a range of natural cosmetics. It may have to wait until I retire from my People seem really keen on natural deodorant. I have made it for myself but haven’t quite got the formulation as I would like it. More practice needed and willing volunteers to trial it! Tell me about "Bosom Pals" and their experience with your products. "Bosom Pals" is a breast cancer support group based in Plymouth (England). They do amazing work...some ladies create fabric bags for drains after surgery! I was involved in a charity calendar in 2015 where we raised £16,000 for Macmillan. I was very lucky to have a forum where some of the ladies trialled my moisturiser for me. I have designed it for sensitive skin so they were an ideal group to participate. Feedback was good regarding the cream itself. Non-greasy, absorbed well, no skin sensitivity issues. I have 3 variations with essential oils and one with no essential oils which I would recommend for anyone undergoing Chemotherapy. £1 from the sale of each 50g pot is donated to Bosom Pals and other breast cancer charities. When you're not working on No Frills, how do you make the most of living in Cornwall? The beautiful Cornish Landscape inspires me. I have access to the moors, forests, beaches. Free and natural! I love the outdoor lifestyle. I have 2 dogs whom I love taking for walks. The outdoors is a great way to relax after a busy day at work. My husband is a wheelchair user and has an ‘off roader’ so we are always looking for somewhere new to go that is accessible. Where there is a will, there is a way! We are also motorcyclists and if we can put up with the mournful stares from our dogs we will escape and go off for a ride. I practice reiki and meditation which I think has added value if carried out outdoors listening to the sounds of nature. Welcome to the Certified Animal-Free family, No Frills! • Are There Vegan Medications?

Even a cursory glance at vegan forums on social media you'll hear the same questions time and again. "Is this medicine vegan?" "Do vegan medications exist?" "Do I have to take meds with animal-derived ingredients?" It is a frustrating, difficult conundrum to navigate. Vegans are often faced with the dilemma of taking their potentially life-saving medications or sticking to their morals and ethics. According to a survey conducted by the Pill Clarity team , " 20.7% of the responders elected to not take an important cholesterol-lowering drug, such as Lipitor (atorvastatin) simply because it had animal-derived ingredients. In another survey of 500 participants, 43.2% of them elected to not take a product with animal ingredients without alternates available." That brings us back to our initial question: What drugs are vegan? The definition of veganism from the Vegan Society states , "Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose." Medications are typically tested on animals to meet safety requirements for drug approval. As such, most medications cannot be considered vegan, but they can be animal-free. Many drugs contain animal-derived ingredients and need better labeling. In a study of 100 patients , 84% reported not knowing that several medications contained ingredients derived from animal sources. Alternatives usually exist for these medications, whether it be a different product or through compounding. However, these alternatives need to be widely known, labeled, and distributed. As we discussed in " Vegan Certified or Vegan Verified? ", there are two ways that a consumer can confirm if a medicine contains animal-derived ingredients: company verification or third-party certification. Company verification requires an inherent trust when a company claims their products do not contain animal-derived ingredients. Certified products are emblazoned with an emblem declaring that a non-biased, third-party double-checked the products and they do not contain animal ingredients. Now each certification is a bit different. Some certifications double-check ingredient lists while others use laboratory testing. It's a good idea to research and understand the differences in the various certifications. “Certified Animal-Free” is a certification program offered by Pill Clarity, Inc. Currently, “Certified Animal-Free” is intended to certify medications, supplements, and cosmetics that are free of any ingredients of animal origin. This certification sets the highest quality standard in the industry as it 1) incorporates lab testing to detect animal-derived ingredients and 2) provides independent verification of the individual ingredients in a product. The certification program addresses the needs of various social and religious cultures such as veganism, vegetarianism, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, as well as those that embrace an animal cruelty-free world. Pill Clarity envisions a future with transparent labeling and easily available animal-free alternatives to medication. Animal-free medication should not be an outlier, but mainstream. We hope that through our educational efforts, outreach to manufacturers, and animal-free certification, we can make steps towards our vision of a world where medications and supplements are completely free from animal-derived ingredients . • Lysulin: A Certified Animal-Free Choice for Diabetes

Sonya Sotomayor, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, once said, "My diabetes is such a central part of my life... it did teach me discipline... it also taught me about moderation... I've trained myself to be super-vigilant... because I feel better when I am in control ( Jain, 2019 )." Dr. John Burd, CEO and Founder of Lysulin, Inc Diabetes affects millions of people world-wide. In 2018, the CDC reported that 10.5% of the US population had diabetes, a percentage that continues to increase with age, as about 26.8% of all Americans above the age of 65 were diagnosed with diabetes. Patients with diabetes often struggle with controlling glucose levels, and this becomes even more difficult with the many complications from this disease, including peripheral neuropathy, kidney disease, and retinopathy. In fact, d iabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 18–64 years. The morbidity of these complications is high - in 2017, diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States . Dr. John Burd, CEO and Founder of Lysulin, Inc., was inspired by growing diabetes statistics and diabetes diagnoses in his own family. Throughout his career, Burd has founded many tools and supplements to help support people with diabetes, and he is most notably known for leading DexCom's popular continuous glucose monitors (Woolsey, 2019). Dr. Burd was inducted into the American Association of Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Hall of Fame in 2005 after winning the Ullman prize for innovation in clinical chemistry. Read more about Dr. Burd in an interview here. Dr. Burd's latest addition to diabetes support is Lysulin, an all-natural supplement that blends lysine, zinc, and Vitamin C. ( Lysulin, n.d. ). Lysulin's composition is based on clinical research that suggests that the combination of lysine, zinc, and Vitamin C can not only support blood sugar levels but also prevent complications from excess glucose. According to a study conducted by Sapienza University of Rome (1993) , D-lysine can bind with excess glucose and pass out of the body through the urine. Clinical trials conducted by Tehran University of Medical Sciences (2016) found that the test group taking L-lysine reduced advanced glycation end products created by excess glucose in the body. Lysulin recently gained patent approval for the prevention of protein glycation using Lysine supplements for a method of monitoring blood sugar control and as a method of treating diabetes using a supplement. In the pilot double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study of 67 participants , substantial reductions in hemoglobin A1c test levels were observed in people taking Lysulin as compared to people taking a placebo. Improved insulin resistance and beta cell function were also observed. Other s tudies suggest vitamin C lowers hemoglobin A1c through antioxidant activity, significantly reducing hemoglobin A1c in subjects with Type 2 diabetes and improving systolic/diastolic blood pressure . While there is data that supports the effectiveness of Lysulin, Burd acknowledges that Lysulin will not work for everyone. In Burd's pilot study, 14 subjects saw improvements while 6 were "non-responders", meaning they saw no effects. Burd also points out that even prescription drugs don’t work for 100% of patients, but closer to 30 and 50%, so he’s happy if Lysulin can work for 76% of people ( Dubois, 2019 ). Lysulin’s easy-to-take, chewable tablet is gluten free, vegetarian and Certified Animal-Free by Pill Clarity . • Is Naproxen (Aleve) Vegan?

The search for naproxen products without animal-derived ingredients can be long and arduous. Scanning label after label only to be stopped by "magnesium stearate" or "shellac." You can develop a headache just in the process of finding a suitable pain reliever! "Do vegan pain relievers exist?" Our team of pharmacists has scoured through thousands of products to find a handful that do not contain animal ingredients. Earlier this year, we found animal-free ibuprofen , animal-free acetaminophen , and animal-free aspirin . We are stoked to add animal-free naproxen to the list! According to WebMD , naproxen is used to relieve mild to moderate pain from various conditions. It also reduces pain, swelling, and joint stiffness from arthritis. This medication is known as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. Looking for a different brand name for your country? Naproxen was first introduced in 1976 , under the prescription brand names Naprosyn and Anaprox. It remains a prescription-only drug in much of the world. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it as an over-the-counter (OTC) drug in 1994, making it easily accessible for acute pain relief and arthritis pain. In the United Kingdom, 250 mg tablets of naproxen were approved for OTC sale under the brand name Feminax Ultra in 2008, for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea. Aleve became available over-the-counter in most provinces in Canada about 10 years ago. Pill Clarity has identified five naproxen products that are free of animal-derived ingredients! • What Is Gelatin and How Is It Made?

Gelatin is one of the most commonly used animal-derived ingredients in medications and supplements. You can also find gelatin in many foods...some obvious choices like gummy bears, marshmallows, and fruit snacks, as well as some surprising products including frosted mini-wheat cereals and some breath mints! This prolific ingredient is derived from cows and pigs , and it is often used as a capsule exterior or tablet binder. Curious about how we go from cow to capsule? Check out this video from a top manufacturer of gelatin and collagen peptide outlining the process of how gelatin is made: Gelatin is found in 9,590 out of 10,586 human products in capsule form, accounting for approximately 90% of products ! Demand for gelatin continues to increase, and global gelatin market projections predict growth from 2.6 billion USD to 3.6 billion USD by 2023 (Gelatin Market, Markets and Markets 2020). What's even more shocking is that there are many vegan alternatives to gelatin ! Manufacturers commonly choose Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) capsules or “Hypromellose.” HPMC is a chemically modified cellulose polymer that is safe for human consumption. Its physical similarities to gelatin make HPMC a very useful alternative, and it has been successfully used as a thickening agent and binder in many products (Labdoor 2014). How similar are the two products? Look at the photo below - one hand is holding traditional gelatin capsules, and the other is holding HPMC capsules. Can you tell the difference and figure out which is which? Drop your guess in the comments, and we'll let you know if you're right! Thankfully, you never have to wonder if your capsule is gelatin or HPMC if you shop through Pill Clarity's online marketplace ! • The Keys to Vegan Sports Nutrition

Following a vegan diet can provide many health benefits because of its richness in fiber, folic acid, magnesium, vitamins C and E, and phytochemicals. Studies have found that vegan diets provide cardiovascular and cognitive benefits, and decrease the risk of various cancers. (Ryding, 2020). In addition to the many health benefits, veganism is good for animal welfare and benefits the environment. Going on a plant-based diet has also been observed to save about 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide a year (Singh, 2019). You can learn more about environmental impact of animal-based ingredients on our blog . Aside from the many benefits, however, veganism can create “challenges that need to be accounted for when designing a nutritious diet,” especially in sports nutrition (Rogerson, 2017). When following a vegan diet, the body can experience a lack of key nutrients that are especially important for athletic performance, including protein, vitamin B12, vitamin D iron, zinc, calcium, and iodine. How can following a vegan diet affect sports nutrition? As an athlete it is crucial to maintain healthy protein sources, as proteins play a key role in red blood cell production, tissue repairs, and building muscle. In addition, it is important to maintain healthy levels of nutrients in the body to nourish the body and help with strength and body cell energy recovery (College of Natural Health). Vegan diets lack protein sources and key nutrients required for athletic activity, leading many to assume that adopting a vegan diet can lead to decreased athletic performance. However, the 2019 documentary “The Game Changers” shows the vegan diet’s long-term positive effects on health and immediate improvement in athletic performance by interviewing successful athletes on plant-based diets, including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Patrik Baboumian, and Dotsie Bausch. Many research studies found two key factors in maintaining proper sports nutrition: careful diet planning and supplementation. Dietary Requirements Energy and nutrient requirements differ from athlete to athlete, depending on the specific sport and intensity. The following list identifies some vegan-friendly foods that are rich in nutrients naturally lacking in a vegan diet (Rosenbloom, 2013) (Norris, 2016).  Protein: legumes, quinoa, pistachios, pumpkin seeds Vitamin B12: fortified nutritional yeast Vitamin D: sun-dried mushrooms, fortified foods Iron: nuts and seeds, dried beans, lentils, tofu, dark green leafy vegetables Zinc: nuts and seeds, dried beans and peas Calcium: soy, rice, broccoli, kale, almonds Iodine: iodized salt Vegan Supplementation Obtaining certain nutrients can often be difficult and inconvenient as it requires lots of careful planning and diligence. This is especially true in the case of proteins, as many vegans require 3-4 servings of high-protein foods per day (Norris, 2016). Commercially available plant-based supplements can thus be very beneficial to reach daily nutrition goals. The most common vegan protein supplement is plant-based protein powder. Recent studies show the positive athletic benefits of using these plant-based protein powders, including improved recovery from training (Rogerson, 2017). Many vegans also choose plant-based supplements for iron, protein, vitamin B12, and other nutrients. If you are looking for vegan-friendly, animal-free supplementation, check out Pill Clarity’s marketplace. We have a variety of sports nutrition products and nutrient supplements ! • Environmental Impact of Animal-Derived Ingredients in Medicine

Global warming, climate change, the greenhouse gas effect… we all have heard how the choices we make in our daily lives contribute to these crises. One of our biggest contributions? Consuming products that contain animal-derived ingredients. Three of the most common animal-derived ingredients include lactose, gelatin, and magnesium stearate, all derived from cows and pigs. These three ingredients are found in about 20-59% of the 100 most common drugs in primary care (BMJ, 2013). The global gelatin market is expected to reach about 4.42 billion dollars (USD) by 2026 due to an increase in demand from several pharmaceutical industries (GlobeNewswire, 2020). Animal-derived ingredients are present in three out of four medications that we ingest regularly, and they contribute significant negative effects on the environment. What specific effects do animals have on the environment? "...the top three meat firms (JBS, Cargill, and Tyson) emitted more greenhouse gases than the entire country of France" Animals contribute to much of the greenhouse gas effect in agriculture. Peter Lehner, a managing attorney for the non-profit environmental law firm EarthJustice, explains that this effect comes from the “ruminant emissions of cows” whose “waste on the ground converts into methane,” (McMahon, 2019). In addition, a study found that in 2016, the top three meat firms (JBS, Cargill, and Tyson) emitted more greenhouse gases than the entire country of France (GRAIN, 2017). Livestock contribute to a significant percentage of carbon emissions, albeit the specific amount is debatable. Many experts have calculated that livestock contribute about 15% of the world’s carbon emissions. However, in 2009, the Worldwatch Institute found uncounted emissions that increased that number to about 51%! Livestock also have a high water usage and contribute to water pollution. A 2010 study found that animals had significantly higher water footprints. Vegetables had a water footprint of about 322 liters/kg and fruits had a water footprint of 962 liters/kg. Meat, however, had much higher water consumption. Chicken had a water footprint of 4,325 liters/kg, pork had a water footprint of 5,988 liters/kg, and beef had an astonishingly high number of 15,415 liters/kg! The earth has growing water constraints because our freshwater sources are drying up (Water Footprint Network, 2010). Runoff of animal feces into bodies of water lead to eutrophication, the excessive growth of plants and algae. This phenomenon uses up the limited supply of oxygen in the body of water at the expense of other species present (van der Zee, 2018). The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have found that livestock is the world's largest user of land resources. They state that “grazing land and cropland dedicated to the production of feed [represent] almost 80% of all agricultural land” and “the total land area occupied by pasture is equivalent to 26% of the ice-free terrestrial surface (FAO, 2020). Large areas of land are thus used to raise animals that will be used to produce various consumer products. What can you do to help? One step you can take to help protect our environment is cutting your usage of products containing animal-derived ingredients, whether it is through adopting a plant based diet, or using animal-free products. Pill Clarity’s marketplace is a great place to start looking for animal-free products you can use in your daily life, and make your contribution to helping protect our environment!
