- Medication Insights from Alpha-gal Social Media Groups
Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is becoming more common, affecting over 450,000 people in the US. It's an allergy triggered by a sugar molecule called α-gal, found in most mammals which can be transmitted from the Lone Star Tick. This allergy is often ignored and makes taking medications tricky because 75% of them have ingredients from animals. What's worse, 75% of AGS patients react to these ingredients, with 50% having severe reactions. A study presented at the American College of Cardiology 73rd Annual Scientific Session & Expo looked at discussions in social media groups for AGS patients about medication. The goal was to understand how hard it is for these patients to deal with medication. Unraveling the Medication Conundrum Patients with AGS are not only vigilant about their dietary choices but also meticulously scrutinize their medication intake. The study revealed that discussions about medications (20%) in AGS social media groups were nearly as prevalent as those about food (22%). Given the prevalence of animal-derived ingredients in medications, transparent labeling is crucial for patients managing AGS. Insights from the Study Researchers looked at posts from three AGS support groups on Facebook, which represented 5% of all members. They analyzed 1,195 posts and sorted them into different categories like treatments, symptoms, and medications. The frequency of drugs mentioned within these groups revealed some noteworthy findings. Diphenhydramine , cetirizine , fexofenadine , and ibuprofen were among the most discussed medications, highlighting the significance of antihistamines and pain relievers in managing AGS-related symptoms. However, what's concerning is the presence of animal-derived ingredients in some of these medications, potentially posing risks to AGS patients. A Call for Transparent Labeling The study underscores the high patient burden associated with identifying safe medications for AGS management. Transparent medication labeling , such as indicating certified animal-free products, could significantly alleviate this burden and enhance patient safety. Conclusion The study sheds light on medication discussions in AGS social media groups, stressing the need for clear labeling and healthcare provider awareness. Collaboration among academia, healthcare, and advocacy groups like Pill Clarity, can address medication challenges. By raising awareness and advocating for transparent labeling, we empower patients and enhance their quality of life. - Anew® Way of Redefining Sustainability: A Conversation with Jayden Klinac
In the following interview, we have the privilege of speaking with Jayden Klinac, the Founder of Anew®, a company creating innovative solutions to tackle the environmental impact of single-use packaging. Anew® offers a circular water bottle made from renewable plant-based materials, along with end-to-end packaging solutions, aiming to revolutionize the way we consume and recycle. Join us as we explore Jayden's vision for a more sustainable future and the transformative potential of Anew®'s approach. How did the idea for Anew® come about, and what motivated the company to focus on solving the problem of single-use packaging? Anew® was really born out of frustration . A frustration that if we wanted to go about our daily lives, which generally involves consuming. Be it in the form of using shampoo to wash our hair, using a bottle to get it a drink of water, having a coffee, or moisturizing our face. Anything that involves using a product generally involves not only having to buy the product, but also having to buy the packaging and that packaging was generally made from fossil fuels, if it was plastic, glass or aluminum and generally came with a very high carbon footprint, and lastly, once we had used the product, it generally left behind waste, which just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. At the very least, we felt that people should have a choice. A choice to use the products they want to use, without having to inherently, use fossil resources and create single use waste. What materials are used to make Anew®'s water bottle, and why are they better for the environment than traditional plastic or glass? Are there any animal-derived ingredients or carrageenan in the development process? Anew® bottles and packaging are made from our Recircle® biopellets - a renewable and circular material. Recircle® is our latest development after my 12 years of designing better materials with the goal of designing waste out of the system. Recircle® is great alternative to the likes of oil-based plastic, glass, aluminum or paperboard for multiple reasons: Its plant-based and made from renewable resources (not made from fossil fuels - once they're gone, they are gone forever) Its reusable and dishwasher safe (Not single use) Its lightweight and perfectly portable, lowering further emissions from shipping Its curbside recyclable Its carbon negative, meaning the plants we grow and use to make Recircle® , absorbs more carbon than our manufacturing process emits No animal-derived ingredients or carrageenan are used in the development process What impact has Anew® had on reducing greenhouse gas emissions? What does it mean to be carbon negative? It's an accepted stance that making things, or using resources, creates a carbon footprint. As a planet, we have created products and systems that emit too much carbon for our atmosphere to maintain a healthy and livable balance. This is why it's not only important for us to lower the carbon emissions we currently emit, but also look into ways where we can suck the overloading of carbon we have already emitted out of the atmosphere, to restore balance. Anew® plays a very small role in what is required, but showing we can make products that are carbon negative, meaning they sequester more carbon than they emit, is a great start to show what's possible. How long is the product reusable for? We like to say that Anew® bottles are reusable like a shoe. They are designed for reuse, and will perform different for each user, based on how they are treated. Every person will use the Anew® bottles for a different amount of time before recycling it, like everyone would keep a pair of shoes for a different period of time. They are dishwasher safe, meaning they are easy to clean and generally come out as good as new after each wash. Some people may use their bottle once, some may use it for a year, or longer. Looking ahead, what are Anew®'s future plans and aspirations in terms of further innovation, expansion, and contributing to a more sustainable future on a global scale? We have some pretty large dreams and aspirations. We are currently focusing on taking Anew® solutions to the world. This year our focus market is North America. We are launching our Anew® bottles and also offering end to end, circular packaging solutions for other businesses looking to lead their industry in sustainable packaging. We are also in constant R&D mode and have some really exciting new and natural materials in development. How might pharmaceutical companies find value in leveraging your packaging systems for their products? We have the technology to make a wide range of bespoke pharmaceutical packaging. We make it very easy for companies to switch their current packaging to Recircle®. A lot of companies do not have an in-house packaging expert, so we play this role with our partner companies and allow them to focus on their core product (what's inside the packaging) while we ensure they are in the most sustainable and innovative packaging available. What do you like to do for fun? I love traveling, any excuse to get in the ocean, be it surfing or foiling and also love spending time in my garden. Thank you to Jayden for sharing Anew®'s story. - Understanding Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
Animal-free isn’t just about going vegan, it’s also about supporting diversity . Diversity is often misunderstood as differences that we can see when it includes less visible qualities too, like being a first-generation student, having an invisible disability, or other lived experiences. What do the rest of the letters in DEIB add to diversity then? Interaction Institute for Social Change by Angus Maguire The E is for equity , which is not the same as equality. This image shows how treating everyone equally (equality) does not meet everyone’s needs while equity accounts for individual differences. Inclusion and belonging are best described in the quote below. Diversity alone is not enough; having a seat at the table does not necessarily mean that you are free to talk or that others will listen if you do. It may seem like a string of letters at first glance, but every part of the DEIB acronym is important. “Diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice be heard.” - Liz Fosslien & Mollie West Duffy DEIB, of course, extends to foods that people eat—here are some of the many reasons why people follow an animal-free diet. Please note that this list is not all-inclusive! Reasons Why People Go Animal-Free Allergies Milk, eggs, fish, and shellfish are major food allergies recognized by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Although these are among the most common, several other allergies cause people to go animal-free. Alpha-gal Syndrome is an example where individuals can have an allergic reaction to red meat, mammalian products, and sometimes even an extract from red seaweed called carrageenan . Religion Observers Pig Cow Poultry Seafood Animal Products Blood Jews ✖ Non-Kosher Must Follow Kosher Slaughter Rules (Shechitah) Must Follow Kosher Slaughter Rules (Shechitah) Must Have Fins and Scales From Kosher Animals Only ✖ Non-Kosher Muslims ✖ Haram Must Follow Halal Slaughter Guidelines (Dhabīḥah) Must Follow Halal Slaughter Guidelines (Dhabīḥah) ✔ Halal From Halal Animals Only ✖ Haram Jehovah's Witnesses ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔ ✔ ✖ Kashrut (כַּשְׁרוּת) : Jewish dietary laws ( kashrut ) forbid the consumption of some animals while others must be killed following kosher slaughter (shechitah) rules. Kosher refers to foods that those who observe the laws of kashrut can have. Non-kosher ( treyf/treif ) animals include pigs, shellfish, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and most insects. Products from non-kosher animals like eggs, milk, and the fat surrounding organs (chelev) are also not allowed. Blood is prohibited regardless of the animal. Sharia (شَرِيعَة) :Islamic law (sharia) categorizes foods as lawful ( halal ) or forbidden (haram). Animal meats that are halal when killed following Islamic dietary laws (dhabīḥah) are beef, poultry, and lamb. Most seafood is halal and is exempt from dhabīḥah. Haram foods include pork, blood, and predatory animals (e.g. birds with talons, reptiles, insects). Jehovah's Witnesses : Similar to other religions where blood represents life, Jehovah's Witnesses cannot have blood . Ahimsa (अहिंसा) : Ahisma is the principle of nonviolence in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. Vegetarianism is strictly observed by Jains and is an individual decision for Buddhists and Hindus. In Hinduism , animal meats and products are associated with social position. Different Views on Kutha (ਕੁਠਾ) Meat : Eating kutha meat is banned, but the definition of kutha meat varies among the Sikh Panth. As such, Sikhs may be vegetarian, vegan, or neither. Zoroastrianism : Originating in ancient Persia, it imposes unique dietary restrictions, including abstaining from creeping animals (e.g. worms, insects, etc.) and ritually unclean foods like beef, pork, and alcohol. Traditional Teachings Beliefs are passed down through oral stories in many cultures. For example, some Navajo people may be cautious about eating certain animals due to The Great Gambler and Emergence Story . Environmental Impact The United Nations has acknowledged the environmental burden of the animal agriculture industry and states that going animal-free is one way to combat climate change . Health & Diet Preference Eating red meat has been linked to heart health issues and other diseases. Plus we all have foods that we like and dislike—this can include animal products! Threats to Diversity Company diversity initiatives are often the first to go, a problem reported by NPR and Forbes . From 2020 to 2023, roles involving DEIB decreased twice as fast as non-DEIB roles at companies with recent layoffs. Likewise, a Pew Research poll found that people disagree about DEIB in the workplace and that some groups value DEIB less than others. These trends are alarming given that DEIB involves people’s lives. It is not something to put away at the end of the day when diversity exists 24/7, especially when it comes to human rights like access to food and medical care . Recently, Alabama passed a bill, SB129 , targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, authored by Republican state Sen. Will Barfoot. The bill prohibits certain public agencies from sponsoring DEI programs and mandates higher education institutions to designate restrooms based on biological sex. Despite opposition from students, educators, and civil rights groups, Gov. Kay Ivey signed the bill into law, aligning Alabama with several other states that have enacted similar measures restricting DEI efforts. The pharmaceutical industry is not safe from this threat either. In addition to layoffs, diversity in clinical trials has been a long-known issue. Lack of representation is problematic because diseases can affect various groups differently . For instance, asthma rates are higher among people of lower socioeconomic status and certain racial/ethnic groups. Trials are meant to study how safe a drug is and how well it works so the participants should be similar to patients who will use the drug after approval. The FDA acknowledged the problem and updated its recommendations to promote trial diversity. Fighting for a Good Cause In recognition of the need for DEIB, Pill Clarity helps patients and healthcare providers determine if medications are animal-free. It is often difficult, however, to gather accurate and timely information from manufacturers so make sure to sign the FDA Citizen Petition filed by Pill Clarity to join the fight for transparent medication labeling. The special thing about FDA Citizen Petitions is that the FDA must respond to them. In other words, Pill Clarity’s petition gives seats at the table, meets people where they are, and lets them have a voice. Now it’s up to you to have your voice heard. - Meet the Team: Yen Nguyen
Yen Nguyen, PharmD, a valued member of our advisory board, holds a pharmacy degree from the University of the Pacific and serves as a Med Info pharmacist in the pharmaceutical industry. With board certification in Geriatric Pharmacy, Dr. Nguyen excels in both community retail practice and specialized care. Her latest paper, "Embracing Medication Needs of Patients based on Ethical, Dietary, and Religious Preferences," illuminates the nuanced requirements of patients seeking medications free from animal-derived ingredients. Why did you join the Pill Clarity team? I was introduced to Sachin, our CEO, through a mutual colleague a few years ago, and I remember being very intrigued by his story of why he started the company. With a retail pharmacy background, I have seen a fair share of my patients struggle with their medications and understanding the ingredients. Transparency in medication has always been and continues to be a major problem that most people aren’t aware of. Even as pharmacists, we often don’t know what’s in these medications. Most of my career has revolved around providing better care and education to various underserved communities, so when I heard that Pill Clarity’s goal is to bring transparency around medications and health products, I wanted to be a part of it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re avoiding animal-derived ingredients for religious, dietary, allergy, or personal reasons, I believe every person should have a choice in deciding what they take, and I want to be a part of a team that is continuously striving to find a solution. What are you currently working on at Pill Clarity? As a pharmacist deeply rooted in my community, there's nothing I'm more passionate about than serving its needs. Over a decade of working in retail pharmacy, I've witnessed countless struggles, listened to endless stories, and formed genuine connections with patients on a personal level. In our neighborhoods, community pharmacists stand as friendly faces and trusted advisors, offering not just prescriptions but also a listening ear and expert advice. It's often in these everyday interactions that we, as community pharmacists, find ourselves playing a crucial role in our patients' healthcare decisions. That's why one of my primary goals is to ensure that everyone in our community has access to animal-free medications. With the Pill Clarity team, I'm working to advocate for clearer labeling and making animal-free medications more accessible at retail pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS. But it's not just about stocking shelves; it's about fostering understanding. I hope to raise awareness among my fellow community pharmacists about the importance of animal-free ingredients, empowering them to better assist patients seeking medications free from animal-derived components. Together, we can ensure that everyone in our community gets the care they deserve, tailored to their needs and values. What is your favorite animal-free product? I don’t have one favorite animal-free product, but I love all the animal-free feminine products from Rael ! As a female, it is difficult to find a line of personal care products that we can trust to be animal-free, and I love how Rael offers so many options. The best thing is that they’re certified animal-free , so I don’t have to question the ingredients or materials used to manufacture their products. What was the most shocking thing you discovered about the pharmaceutical industry when you started working here? I was very surprised to learn that many healthcare providers do not know what ingredients are considered animal-derived. I am embarrassed to admit that I was a pharmacist, who is supposedly known as “a drug expert”, but also did not know the list of common animal-derived ingredients until I joined the Pill Clarity team. Drug companies usually have a Medical Information department that is staffed with healthcare professionals to answer patient inquiries regarding their medications, however, a recent survey showed only 60% of the companies were able to provide an accurate response to questions about animal-derived ingredients. What do you like to do for fun? I love to travel when I’m not working. My favorite thing about traveling is having the opportunity to explore new cultures and learn what makes each country unique. I love how traveling broadens my perspectives and teaches me a new sense of appreciation for life. - Chocolate and Alpha-gal
Valentine’s Day is around the corner and you probably can't help but notice the chocolate section at the grocery store. Have you ever wondered if the chocolates are vegan-friendly? What about Alpha-gal friendly? Let’s break down what chocolates are made of and how to find ones that are suitable for you. Animal-Derived Ingredients in Chocolate While chocolate can vary significantly between brands and places of production, common ingredients include cocoa beans, cocoa butter, sugar, and either milk or dairy alternatives. The presence of milk in most chocolate poses a primary concern for vegans and those with alpha-gal. It’s crucial to carefully inspect the ingredient list, keeping an eye out for animal-derived components such as milk, milk powder, milk fat, lactose, milk whey, casein, cream, egg, gelatin, and lard . Some candies may use confectioner's glaze which can include shellac - a resin secreted by the female lac bug. Additionally, honey is produced by bees and may be used by certain manufacturers to enhance flavor. It's important to note that this is different from honey flavor , which can be derived from synthetic sources. Did you know that carrageenan is a food additive extracted from red seaweed? Companies often use carrageenan as a thickening agent and it's generally harmless for most people. Carrageenan contains alpha-gal, which might cause some AGS patients to experience an allergic reaction. Despite this, as it’s not sourced from animals, chocolates labeled as vegan-friendly may still incorporate carrageenan. Types of Chocolate Chocolate comes in a variety of flavors, ranging from dark to white, with different mixtures in between. Some are sweeter and creamier, while others are more on the bitter side. Dark chocolate: Usually contains about 50% to over 80% cocoa solids. It generally doesn’t contain milk, but some brands may add milk to their products. Milk chocolate: Usually contains about 35%-55% cocoa solids, but can have as low as 10%. Vegan milk chocolate tends to use plant-based milk, including nut milk, oat milk, coconut milk, soy milk, and almond milk. White chocolate: Doesn’t contain any cocoa solids. It’s made with cocoa butter, sugar, and milk. Dairy-free or vegan white chocolate uses plant-based milk. The Controversy in Vegan Chocolates Although some chocolates may advertise as vegan or dairy-free, there may be trace amounts of milk from cross-contamination if they are produced with the same machinery used to make milk chocolate. Look for statements like “may contain milk,” “may contain traces of milk,” or “produced in a facility with milk” on the package label. A study was done by the FDA to test for milk allergens in dairy-free dark chocolate and found that 4 of the 52 sampled products “had potentially hazardous levels of milk allergen.” The FDA recommends those who are allergic to milk to contact the manufacturers to confirm the presence of milk or shared machinery. Learn more about the FDA study . Vegan Does Not Mean Allergen-free! Be sure to always read the ingredients/allergy statements on all packages. See examples below: Conclusion There are many options for vegan chocolate, as well as dairy-free chocolate. For Alpha-gal patients who are allergic to dairy, we recommend that you check the ingredient list, read the milk statements on the label, and confirm with the manufacturer to ensure they don't use shared machinery with other milk-containing products. Since the FDA doesn't have a strict regulation around the terms "vegan" or "dairy-free," don't forget to double-check all of your chocolates. Living a vegan or plant-based lifestyle doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your sweet tooth, but do take the extra step to make sure they are safe for you to eat. - Meet the Team: Jasmine Uchi
Jasmine Uchi, our Director of Medical Affairs and Operations, holds a pharmacy degree from California Northstate University, College of Pharmacy. Internally, she’s known as the “alpha-gal pharmacist”. (Fun fact: She was the first one in the company to make the observation of this allergy!) Since joining our team in 2021, she has played a pivotal role, contributing significantly to our success. Why did you join the Pill Clarity team? I’ve always prioritized finding a job that I’m not only passionate about but also making an impact. The work we do at Pill Clarity is exactly that. We are continuously committed to making a difference and being an advocate for those with Alpha-gal Syndrome, and those with dietary, religious, or personal preferences. I am always so grateful to be surrounded with such a supportive team who is just as determined to push for transparency and transformation within healthcare as much as I am. What is your favorite animal-free product? My favorite certified animal-free product would definitely be the Evoke Skincare line. We love a good skincare routine. I use the Firm Skin Serum and the Vitamin C Serum every day and night and I’ve seen a huge improvement in my skin. What was the most shocking thing you discovered about the pharmaceutical industry when you started working here? There’s a lot, but if I were to choose one thing it would be the complexity and lack of transparency when it comes to answering the simple question of, “Does this product contain any animal-derived ingredients?” Some pharmaceutical companies take a long time or don't answer at all when you ask. This happens because companies get ingredients from different places, causing delays or mistakes in their response. Using independent third-party verification is important to make sure products are high-quality. What was your favorite Pill Clarity project or initiative you've worked on so far? Throughout my time with Pill Clarity, I've had the opportunity to collaborate with different people and companies. One of my favorite collaborations we did was with Rael and the Pill Club . I have always been passionate about Women's Health, so being able to lead an initiative that combined women's health and the work we're doing at Pill Clarity felt like a full circle moment for me. Other than that, I am so proud of the impact we're making to help the Alpha-gal community. When I first started with Pill Clarity I had no idea it existed until I went through our archives of inquiries. I started to notice people coming to us stating they had Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS) and that's when I started to do more research on this. Now, we have become one of the most trusted resources for these patients and I feel so honored to help the AGS community as best as we can. What do you like to do for fun? I enjoy spending time with my Frenchie, Scooby. Before adopting him I loved to constantly travel and explore new places. Journaling is another activity I cherish, as it allows me to capture and reflect upon my experiences, thoughts, and emotions. - Living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome: Hopeful Perspectives from a Patient
This narrative is a firsthand account shared by an individual living with Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS). Hello, my name is Emily and I have been living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome since July 2022. I live in a rural community located in Southeast Kentucky. It was a very scary and difficult time in the beginning. I almost lost my life several times with trips to the emergency room (ER) within a week, not knowing at the time that Alpha-Gal was the culprit of my issues. An initial unknown reaction was at the ER after being given IV antibiotics that contained mammal-derived ingredients. Within minutes my blood pressure and heart rate spiked then suddenly dropped, and my fingers were blue. Almost in a seizure state and on the verge of unconsciousness. The next incident with the ER occurred a week later which led to massive hives that eventually covered my body from head to toe, hypertension and hypotension, bradycardia, and chest pain. Lastly, an incident being transported by EMS to the hospital. Symptoms were difficulty breathing, bradycardia, face/lips swollen, which led to full blown anaphylaxis, and the paramedics administered IV epinephrine on the spot. A week later, I received the call that would change my life. I was positive for Alpha-Gal, which resulted from a tick bite from the Lone Star tick. This is a life-threatening allergy from red meats. But let me say, it is so much more than that. Some people can react to anything that contains animal derived ingredients. When diagnosed, I didn’t realize how much impact this would have on my daily life. I am a registered nurse, and until that point I had never heard of such a thing. Other tick-borne illnesses, yes, but not this. I quickly found out that no medical professional I dealt with really had any experience with this, and many were not even aware of it! I felt overwhelmed, alone, scared, and defeated. So, from that point, I dedicated myself to educating myself with as much information as possible. Now, during this time I dropped weight quickly and cried a lot. I was scared to eat anything thinking “what if it caused a reaction?” As I am sure most can relate who lived with AGS, it was not an easy start. Your body is full of inflammation inside and out and needs time to heal. Medications, plenty of water, and omitting all mammal products/by products is a healthy start. The hurdles that I have faced with AGS are ongoing. For me, I have to read and research everything that is going into my body and coming into contact with it. All foods, personal hygiene and skincare products. This includes hairspray, toothpaste, toilet paper, make-up, etc. I am fume reactive as well. So, it presents a more complex challenge. As my reaction symptoms include dropping rapid heart rate or the opposite, dizziness, headache, nausea, and difficulty breathing. I have to think about my surroundings consistently. Going outside, making sure you check for ticks, stay away from leaves, apply tick spray, etc. People’s perfume, strong laundry detergent, candles, meat cooking, cigarette smoke, air fresheners., as these can cause anaphylaxis. The list goes on. It is exhausting. Your mind and body are never fully at rest. Let me say this, this affects everyone in your life, especially if you have a partner. This becomes stressful for them as well. Even though we are living it and it is our bodies, they live with us. It gets tiresome. It can bring you closer or push you further apart. As far as my diet goes, changes had to be made. I now eat whole, fresh foods. This means, I cook all my meals and eat fresh fruits/vegetables. I have issues with dairy (some people do not). No eating out. With so much cross contamination, cooking practices, and unsafe ingredients, it is not safe. My husband and I cannot just go out for a date night dinner or stop by any restaurant for food while running errands. Packed snacks/drinks are a go-to. For me, eating a low histamine/low caffeine diet consists of fresh chicken, sweet potatoes, salads, organic brown rice pastas, oatmeal, ostrich, duck, emu meats, organic shakes, and vegetables are my go to. Homemade pizza, biscuits and gravy, and homemade desserts are a plus. Anything with fins and feathers are safe to consume. My biggest defeat in the beginning was trying to find safe alternatives to my daily prescribed medications. This was an absolute nightmare. I had no help from healthcare providers, allergists (several), or pharmacists. They were not familiar with such a thing and offered no guidance. And the ones that stated they were, in reality, still had no clue the depth that this fell into. Eventually I found a compounding pharmacy to safely make my medications, but these are not covered by insurance and can get costly. I recently inquired on Pill Clarity about my medications and the team was successful in researching and relating information back to me. They had not only found safe options, but also forwarded me the name of medication, NDC numbers, as well as the manufacturer. For once, as far as professional assistance was concerned, I did not feel alone in this ongoing stressful journey. It is very difficult to navigate typical over the counter medications as well. A lot contain gelatin, dairy, lactose, and other animal derived ingredients. Living with AGS presents its challenges. Expenses to accommodate this allergy can get costly. Food costs twice as much, since it is primarily clean, whole foods. Complete changes in all products at the beginning add up. Every single person is different with this. Reactions and severity vary from one to the other. You can go places and do things, but it requires research and planning, whereas before I would not have given that a second thought. It has most certainly taken away some freedom. Today, I am in a much better place mentally and physically than a year ago, and I am thankful for that. My hope is that in the future, there is a cure for Alpha-gal. At this time, there is not one. Yes, you can take daily antihistamines to help with issues and there are Xolair injections for people who suffer with fume reactions, as well as an acupuncture treatment called SAAT. Everyone reacts differently to all of these. It is said that this may at some point go into remission, but if bitten again, will come back worse. More education is a must!! I fear that until the CDC requires mandatory reporting for positive cases in every state, this will not happen anytime soon. For anyone that is coping with this or knows someone, I would advise please do your own research on products and safety. Carry your rescue meds, get a medical alert bracelet/card, and seek support, because this can break you down quickly. Be cautious and always be prepared. This is a life-threatening allergy and should be taken seriously. But still enjoy life to the best of your ability! Conclusion We extend our gratitude to Emily for sharing her experience of living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome. Her candid account serves as a beacon of inspiration for those facing similar challenges, offering insights into the complexities of daily life, and the strength required to navigate this unique journey. We hope your story will foster empathy and a sense of community to others learning to manage this allergy. Emily’s story is just one of the 1,300+ inquiries we’ve resolved this year. - Learning About Alpha-Gal Syndrome: A Physician Assistant's Journey
Introduction: In healthcare, some conditions are not widely known, and healthcare providers often encounter challenges in diagnosis and treatment. One such condition is Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), an allergy to mammalian-derived products (e.g. food, health products, etc.) transmitted through the Lone Star tick. In a study by the CDC , less than half of surveyed healthcare providers have never heard of AGS or knew how to properly diagnose and treat the condition. Janei Brockhausen, a devoted Physician Assistant (PA-C) in Colorado Springs, holds a master's degree in Emergency Medicine and Family Practice from A.T. Still University, a Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin, and completed an MD residency in Family Practice. As a mom to two boys and a proud grandma to 10 grandchildren, she embraces her family role alongside her medical career. This year, she faced a personal challenge with an AGS diagnosis but turned it into an opportunity to advocate for others. Janei reached out to Pill Clarity for animal-free medications for her AGS patients. Her dedication goes beyond the clinic, and we're excited to share her journey addressing the unique challenges of working with alpha-gal patients. Discovering Alpha-gal: Janei's introduction to Alpha-gal Syndrome came through a patient about a year ago in 2022. Despite her existing knowledge of common allergies, including peanut allergies and gluten sensitivities, alpha-gal was a new discovery for her. This highlights the lesser-known nature of alpha-gal and the need for increased awareness in the medical community. Navigating Medication Challenges: One of the primary challenges Janei faces is the complexity of medication management for alpha-gal patients. Certain medications with animal-derived ingredients, such as Heparin and Coumadin, pose risks for these individuals, and Janei often encounters difficulties when seeking suitable alternatives. The reluctance of local pharmacies to assist in this process emphasizes the need for broader education and awareness. A Glimpse into Patient Stories: Janei shares a poignant patient story, underlining the diverse manifestations of alpha-gal syndrome. One patient, diagnosed with primarily gastrointestinal symptoms, was not given an Epi-Pen. That patient later experienced a severe drop in blood pressure during an episode where the paramedics were called. She also tells us the emotional toll on children and teenagers dealing with this condition is particularly challenging, as they grapple with dietary restrictions and the desire to fit in. Other patients have shared similar challenges while managing their alpha-gal allergy symptoms. The Joys of the Job: Despite the challenges, Janei expresses her love for her patients and the satisfaction derived from helping them navigate the intricacies of AGS. Her dedication to providing excellent care shines through, illustrating the resilience and compassion required in the face of a relatively unknown condition. Advice for Patients and Healthcare Providers: Janei's valuable advice extends to both patients and healthcare providers. For patients, she emphasizes the fluctuating nature of alpha-gal reactions, encouraging vigilance and awareness. Healthcare providers, she suggests, need to prioritize education, active communication, and a willingness to delve into researching and understanding alpha-gal syndrome. Evolving Landscape of Medicine: In the closing remarks, Janei reflects on the changes in medicine over the last 5-7 years. The shift towards concierge medicine has impacted accessibility, making it challenging for patients to find good healthcare providers. This raises concerns about the increasing demand for quality healthcare in a rapidly evolving medical landscape. Conclusion: Janei Brockhausen's story sheds light on the complexities of working with alpha-gal syndrome patients. Her experiences underscore the need for increased awareness, education, and support for both patients and healthcare providers dealing with this allergy. As medicine continues to evolve, it is crucial to recognize and address the unique challenges presented by conditions like alpha-gal syndrome, ensuring comprehensive and compassionate care for those affected. Thank you again Janei for your dedication to serving your community and your willingness to share your story as a healthcare professional adapting and overcoming new obstacles. - Understanding Different Vegan Certifications
In recent years, the rise of veganism has prompted a surge in the demand for certified vegan products. As more consumers seek to align their purchases with their ethical and environmental values, the need for reliable vegan certifications has become increasingly important. However, navigating the various symbols and labels on products can be a daunting task. Understanding the differences between different vegan certifications is essential for consumers looking to make informed choices. The Difference Between "Cruelty-free", "Vegan", and "Animal-free" "Cruelty-free" refers to products that are not tested on animals . It means that neither the product nor its individual ingredients have undergone any form of animal testing. This term is commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products, and household items, reflecting a commitment to ethical practices and animal welfare. However, animal byproducts can be present in the final product (e.g. lip balm). "Vegan" refers to a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude (as far as is possible and practicable) all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals. "Animal-free" refers to products or items that do not contain any ingredients derived from animals or animal by-products . These products are entirely free from animal-derived components or substances. This term is used by Pill Clarity for healthcare products only (e.g. prescription medications, dietary supplements). However, animal-testing may have been used in the research and development process. Diverse Certifications Numerous organizations and labels exist worldwide to certify products as cruelty-free, vegan, or animal-free. Understanding the nuances of these certifications helps consumers identify which standards align best with their values. Here is a breakdown of some we found (listed in alphabetical order). Organization No Animal Byproducts? No Animal Testing? Follows AMA Policy H-100.947?* $0 Application Fee? Average Certification Time American Vegetarian Association A few weeks BeVeg 4-6 weeks Eve Vegan 3 months The Leaping Bunny The Vegan Society 30-60 days Vegan Action 4-6 weeks Pill Clarity 2-4 weeks V-label 2-8 weeks VegeCert A few weeks Key : * Animal-Derived Ingredients Policy H-100.947 : (1) Urges manufacturers to include all ingredients and components present in medical products on the product label, including both active and inactive ingredients, and denote any derived from an animal source; and (2) encourages cultural awareness regarding patient preferences associated with medical products containing active or inactive ingredients or components derived from animal source. The Importance of Third-Party Certification Independent third-party certification is crucial as it offers impartial and credible assessments of products. These certifications ensure unbiased evaluations, standardization, and consistency. They hold companies accountable, encourage transparency, and drive improvements in industry practices while differentiating products in competitive markets. Ultimately, third-party certifications establish trust, confirming a product's adherence to specific quality standards. Conclusion The growing availability of vegan certifications, including Pill Clarity's Animal-Free Certification , is a positive step toward a more transparent and sustainable future. Each certification represents a commitment to the environment and consumer transparency. Whether it's vegan, cruelty-free, or animal free certifications, certification labels provide a sense of accountability and allow consumers to connect with the products they choose. By understanding the differences between these certifications, consumers can confidently support products aligned with their values. - Vegan Chefs Share Easy Plant-Based Recipes
Happy World Vegan Month! Pill Clarity asked five vegan chefs to share their favorite plant-based recipes and what inspired their vegan lifestyles. We are joined by Julieanna Hever , Malcolm Regisford, Reina Montenegro, Babette Davis, and Jaclyn "Jax" Rosen. They're here to show us that you don't need animal-derived ingredients to make a filling and tasty meal! Julieanna's Vegan Cream of Mushroom Cauliflower Rice "As promised, here is my all-time favorite recipe I recently stumbled upon in my kitchen. Since it is chock-full of myriad mushrooms and brewing with Thanksgiving autumnal flavors, it was love at first bite. Months later, I still eat this recipe nearly every single day. I hope you love it as much as I do." Julieanna Hever , MS, RD, CPT, Plant-Based Dietitian and Author of The Choose You Now Diet and Plant-Based Nutrition (Idiot's Guides) which bridges her biggest passions for food, presenting, and helping people. Instagram | Website Julieanna, what was the most difficult challenge you faced when you first went vegan? At the time I initially was exposed to this information, the internet was not accessible and I did not know any people who ate that way so I had very limited access to any resources. My parents were worried about me and they staged an intervention with our family friend who was a nurse to convince me it was dangerous to omit animal products due to the high risk for nutritional deficiencies. She scared me and I went back to eating a "normal" diet. But I knew that there had to be more to the story. It took me many years of continued education and, ultimately, a masters degree in nutrition for me to dive directly into the literature and learn about how health-promoting a plant-based diet really is. I am grateful there is a vast plethora of resources available now for all of those interested in pursuing this path. What advice do you have for someone who is new to the vegan lifestyle? We are all creatures of habit, rotating through a few different recipes day after day, week after week. Now is the best time to transition to a plant-based diet because we have limitless access to recipes, tips, ingredients and you can find or make almost anything you have always loved to eat modified into plant. The best way to ease into this way of eating is to have fun and explore! Find new whole food, plant ingredients and recipes that sound amazing to you and try them. If you love it, add it to your rotation. If you don't, modify or move on. All you need is a repertoire of just a few go-to recipes and you are all set. Secondly, immerse yourself in books, cookbooks, and blogs so you learn all about the why's and how's of eating plants. I have now published nine books with hundreds of recipes and find it exciting that there are infinite ways to enjoy a diet based on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, mushrooms, nuts, seeds, herbs, and spices. Finally, look for likeminded people who have been eating this way for a while and those who are making the transition, too. Having social support is helpful and synergistic during this process, that becomes easier and easier with practice. As a dietitian, how can we make improvements to our diet and health? I believe the biggest reason we continue to struggle with increasing rates of obesity and prevalence of the world's top killer diet-related chronic diseases is because of confusion. There is so much misinformation and too much focus on the details. Researchers and healthcare providers still argue in the weeds about macros and ratios and calories. I call this macroconfusion. If we simplify the messaging , more people will be effectively able to improve their diet and their health. Instead of recommending a "low-glycemic, low-fat, moderate-protein, high-carbohydrate diet," people will more easily be able to interpret something like "eat more whole plants and minimize or omit animal products and highly processed foods." Malcolm's Vegan Black Bean Burger "One of my favorite recipes and one of the first recipes I learned to make was a Black Bean Burger. But not an ordinary one, a deluxe version with a lot of flavor. It's made with a homemade burger sauce, vegan cheese, and crispy onion on top, you gotta try this one!" Malcolm Regisford is a Holistic Wellness Enthusiast, Former Division 1 Athlete & Plant Based Cook. He founded Tapped In Wellness to make the world of health seem more approachable through a holistic lens. Instagram | Website When and why did you decide to start a plant-based diet? I became plant based in late 2018 while I was a collegiate basketball player at Colgate University. I had an injury that required surgery and wasn't healing according to plan so I looked for alternative methods of healing. This included a new functional fitness approach to training, introducing more mindfulness and meditation and of course eating full plant-based , all of which helped me make a full recovery. Malcolm, what was the most difficult challenge when you first went animal-free? The biggest challenge I faced initially was figuring out what exactly to eat and how much . I had to learn an entirely new way to eat and eat enough so that I was satiated. This was difficult at first because I didn't know what was considered "vegan" or "plant based" initially but once I learned all I needed to and started cooking for myself it was smooth sailing. For those starting a vegan lifestyle, what tips do you have? The biggest piece of advice I would give would be to go easy on yourself at the beginning as you're learning this new way of life and look to others for inspiration . Stay connected to why you made the switch in the first place and use the internet to gather info. I learned almost everything I know now through watching other creators online and seeing how they live a plant-based lifestyle and was able to adapt it into my own. Reina's Vegan Fried Carrot-Jicama Lumpia With Garlic Soy Dipping Sauce "Growing up in a Filipino household, meat is always in all our dishes. I decided to recreate this dish and use some very delicious vegan ground meat that's available in all supermarkets to make what my mom used to make for us growing up. Now we can have it cruelty free, delicious AND good for you. Hope you enjoy it!" Reina Montenegro is a Vegan Chef, Restauranter, Influencer, and has been featured in the Food Network, NYTimes, NBC News, and many more. She owns several Filipino, plant-based restaurants, the most recent “Chef Reina” in Brisbane, CA. Instagram | Website Why did you decide to start a vegan diet? It was for health reasons at first. My daughter had a skin problem and I read somewhere that dairy had a lot to do with skin diseases. Then I stumbled upon documentaries about meat consumption and animal cruelty and turned vegan overnight. What was the hardest part of your vegan journey? For me, it was the thought of never having Filipino food again knowing that all Filipino dishes will always have meat or animal products in them. Most importantly, not being able to enjoy the food I grew up eating . What's your advice for someone who is considering switching to a plant-based diet? I'd say, it's easier than you think . The options we have nowadays are far better than it was 7 years ago! Start with the basics and go from there! I believe that being vegan is the best decision anyone will ever make. Even if you choose to eat vegan once a week will make a HUGE impact on your health and this world we live in! Babette's Vegan Curry Cous Cous Salad "This is such an easy and delicious recipe to throw together and keep in the fridge for a healthy and quick snack or meal when things get busy. You can add whatever veggies you have in the fridge that need to be used, as well as some tofu for added protein!" Babette Davis is a health coach, fitness enthusiast, speaker, and co-owner of Stuff I Eat Restaurant in Inglewood, CA. Instagram | Website When did you first become vegan? I started my plant-based lifestyle in 1990 after my first date with my husband . He prepared my first vegan meal and was my entry point into this lifestyle. I remember digesting that meal without any complications and I've been hooked ever since. What motivated you to switch to a plant-based diet? I'm really fortunate that my transition from the SAD diet to the PLANT-BASED was very welcomed and easy. I had so many digestion issues that eating for me meant suffering. I learned how to properly combine my food and nourish my body which made me fall in love with the lifestyle. What can you share to someone new to eating animal-free? My advice would be to change the narrative in your head if you're having a rough time. Its such a beautiful gift that you're giving yourself and the planet. Take it easy on yourself . Be gentle if you make mistakes and reach out to people for support. Jax's Plant-Based Peanut Butter Chocolate Squares with Berries "This is such sweet peanut butter goodness with chocolate in every bite, enjoy! Next year I have a cookbook coming out, all about how to throw together delicious & healthy meals without following a recipe." Jaclyn Rosen, “Jax” is a Plant-Based Lifestyle & Nutrition Coach. She hopes to empower her clients to live a plant-based lifestyle they are excited about without feeling restricted. Instagram | Website Jax, can you tell us about when you first became vegetarian and vegan? When I went vegetarian in the 90’s, I was unaware about nutrition. Since I grew up on Long Island, I survived on carbs like lots of pasta, bagels and fat-free Snackwell's cookies. Only when I look back do I realize that the biggest challenge was making sure I ate more whole foods vs processed foods, but I didn’t know any better. Fast-forward to when I went vegan 20 years later in 2014 I had access to more information and understood how easy it was to fall in the “junk food vegan” trap. Currently I aim to eat about 90-95% whole foods diet and 5-10% sometimes foods which include vegan pizza, brownies, chips and salsa, banana bread and wine. Everyone is different so if you’re just starting out come up with a % that works for you. Have you ever tried to find animal-free health products like medications or supplements? If so, how was your experience? All the time. I like to know exactly what ingredients are in my supplements or medications. I understand that supplements aren’t FDA-regulated so they don’t evaluate the labels or analyze the products before going to market and that makes me nervous. Although a lot of companies are being tested by independent third-parties to ensure the purity and quality of their products and I really appreciate that. When it comes to medications, it seems more difficult to confirm ingredients or if they're derived from animals. I would like for it to be easier to find animal-free health products, not only for myself, but when recommending them to my clients as well. What advice do you have for eating out and social eating especially during the holidays? Since dining out, parties and holiday celebrations can be a struggle, I created a free Social Eating & Drinking Survival Guide for anyone who is plant-based & health-focused. It’s a free 5-page guide full of my personal tips & tricks for eating and drinking what you want at dinner parties, happy hours & holiday festivities without restriction or morning-after regret. With the holidays approaching, I highly recommend everyone check it out. And feel free to email or DM me with any questions! Conclusion Thank you chefs Julieanna, Malcolm, Reina, Babette, and Jax for sharing delicious plant-based recipes! We enjoyed learning about your vegan journey and appreciate your tips and motivation. You can find more information, recipes, and tips on each of their websites and social media profiles! Let us know if you try any of these recipes at home!
