- Is Claritin Vegan?
Generally, 3 out of 4 oral products contain animal derived ingredients. It becomes an arduous task to find over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription pharmaceuticals and supplements that are completely animal-free. Here at Pill Clarity, we are regularly asked about animal-free allergy medications, specifically we are asked whether Claritin is vegan. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, more than 50 million people in the U.S. experience allergies each year. There are several OTC antihistamines and homeopathic medications available to relieve allergy symptoms. What is in Claritin (loratadine)? Claritin is an antihistamine medication used for temporary relief of allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itching, rashes, hives, and watery eyes. It selectively blocks the H1 receptors in the body which are activated during an allergic reaction. Claritin is the brand name for loratadine. Many Claritin or loratadine products can have different inactive ingredients. Depending on the company, some of the inactive ingredients in loratadine products may contain animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin, lactose, or magnesium stearate. Animal-Free Claritin As of June 2025, Claritin has two verified animal-free products based on our current knowledge: Claritin (loratadine) only products: Claritin Liquid 24-Hour Cooling Honey Flavor ✓ Verified Animal-Free Children's Claritin Syrup ✓ Verified Likely Animal-Free Liquid-Gels 24 Hour 10 mg ✘ Not Animal-Free (contains Gelatin ) Adult Redi-Tabs 24 hours 10 mg ✘ Not Animal-Free (contains Gelatin ) Adult Redi-Tabs 12 Hour 5 mg ✘ Not Animal-Free (contains Gelatin ) Junior’s Redi-Tabs 24 Hour 10 mg ✘ Not Animal-Free (contains Gelatin ) Junior’s Redi-Tabs 12 Hour 5mg ✘ Not Animal-Free (contains Gelatin ) Claritin-D [Loratadine (Antihistamine) + Pseudoephedrine (Nasal decongestant)] products: 12 Hour Tablets ✘ Not Animal-Free (contains Lactose ) 24 Hour Tablets ✘ Not Animal-Free (contains Lactose ) Similar Products: Some people also derive benefits from these other verified animal-free products: e.g., Allegra , Zyrtec, and Genexa Allergy Care . - Vegan-Friendly High Blood Pressure Medications (ACE Inhibitors & ARBs)
Hypertension is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the main cause of global mortality. Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) are first-line treatment options for the treatment of high blood pressure. For information on animal-free ACE inhibitors and ARBs - contact our medical information team! Suboptimal blood pressure control is a common attribute of: Cardiovascular Disease: 55% of ischemic heart disease 58% of other cardiovascular diseases (heart failure, peripheral arterial disease) Cerebrovascular disease: 58% of hemorrhagic strokes 50% of ischemic strokes Kidney function decline What is Hypertension? Normal blood pressure is categorized by a systolic pressure (pumping pressure) below 120 mm Hg and a diastolic pressure (filling pressure) below 80 mm Hg. Hypertension is diagnosed when blood pressure is consistently measured with a systolic reading greater than or equal to 130 and/or a diastolic reading greater than or equal to 80 mm Hg. Treatment of Hypertension It is important to note that the treatment of hypertension should involve lifestyle modifications in addition to blood pressure-lowering medications such as ACE inhibitors and ARBs. Lifestyle Modifications Dietary Salt Restriction Weight Loss Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension ( DASH) diet : a diet high in vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy products, whole grains, poultry, fish, nuts, and low in sweets, and red meats. Regular Exercise Decrease Alcohol Intake Smoking cessation Kidney Protection from ACEIs and ARBs ACE inhibitors and ARBs decrease blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. This vascular relaxation decreases the pressure in the blood vessels of the kidneys, improving blood flow and kidney function. ACE inhibitors and ARBs also help to prevent protein from leaking into urine and improve sodium excretion, aiding normal kidney function. These kidney protective effects are notably beneficial in patients with congestive heart failure and diabetes. Possible Side Effects of ACE Inhibitors and ARBs Cough (ACE inhibitors only) Hyperkalemia: High Potassium Levels Angioedema: S welling beneath the skin's surface, typically appearing around the face, lips, tongue, throat, or extremities Avoid ACE Inhibitors and ARBs in Pregnancy According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the use of ACE inhibitors and ARBs is not recommended in pregnant women as the medications may cause fetal harm. Complications include fetal kidney impairment, oligohydramnios, and death. Studies show that these complications occurred more frequently when ACE inhibitors or ARBs were used during the second and third trimester or the entire pregnancy. Conclusion Although many brand name ACE inhibitors and ARBs contain animal-derived ingredients, we do not discourage the use of potentially life-saving medications which may not be animal-free. The adoption of a vegan or vegetarian diet can help lower blood pressure. To ensure products contain no animal-derived ingredients or by-products, we have either certified or verified each product on our online marketplace and blog posts. For product verification, we conduct independent research and collaborate with manufacturers to confirm the source of each active and inactive ingredient. Certified products undergo pharmacist ingredient reviews similar to product verification, but also inspection of the manufacturing process and laboratory testing for animal derivatives. - Wegovy vs Mounjaro: Next Animal-Free TikTok Weight Loss Trend
Obesity an increasing health concern Figure 1. Obesity Effects On the Body (Healthline) Today, many people are more obese than underweight in most regions of the world according to the World Health Organization. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in March 2017, the United States had a prevalence of 41.9% for obesity. Obesity and being overweight can be defined as having abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that can cause health issues, with a body mass index (BMI) of over 25kg/m2 being considered overweight, and a BMI of over 30kg/m2 being considered obese. Obesity can cause health issues such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, depression, and even some cancers as shown in figure 1. from Healthline . The CDC also reported medical costs were $1,861 higher for adults with obesity compared to those at a healthy weight in the United States. People may have several reasons why they are having problems losing weight such as diet, physical activity, environmental factors, and even genetics. Is there anything that can be done? All is not lost and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. According to the CDC, about half of the US population (49.1%) have attempted to lose weight in the last 12 months, with about 45% struggling globally to lose weight. With the help of physical activity and diet, moderate weight loss can improve obesity-related health issues. When diet and physical activity are insufficient, the addition of prescription medications may be another option for those overweight or obese. There are many prescription drugs on the market today that are trying to combat obesity in adults such as Xenical, Qsymia, Contrave, Wegovy, and a new medication called Mounjaro that may soon be FDA approved for weight loss. Investigational studies for Mounjaro have been promising, showing an average weight loss of 15% after about 16.5 months of 5 mg/week treatment, 19.5% after 10 mg/week, and 20.9% after 15 mg/week. On the other hand, Wegovy is currently approved by the FDA for chronic weight management and has resulted in 15% weight loss after approximately 16 months of treatment. After the weight loss tiktok trend that sold out much of Ozempic stock, Wegovy and Manjouro may be the next trendy weight-loss drugs. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that increases insulin, decreases glucagon, slows digestion, and affects appetite. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor and GLP-1 agonist that increases insulin, decreases glucagon, and slows digestion. Both Wegovy and Mounjaro are subcutaneous once-weekly injections that should be used in addition to physical activity and diet. One key difference for Wegovy is being FDA approved for the indication of chronic weight management while Mounjaro is only FDA approved for the indication of blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes. Mounjaro’s popular SURMOUNT-1 trial looked specifically into weight loss and the treatment of obesity. According to the SURMONT-1 study, Mounjaro, at its highest dose (15mg/week), has shown a weight loss of 21% to 22.5%. FDA is currently reviewing the New Drug Application for Mounjaro. The chronic weight management indication is on the FDA fast track, and it is expected to be completed sometime in 2023. While both of these medications are promising, it is important to talk to your healthcare providers to see if this type of medication is right for you, what interactions may be present, and what side effects you should be concerned about. - Vegan-Friendly Women’s Health Products for Every Stage of Life
This post is in collaboration with Rael and The Pill Club. More feminine hygiene products can be found here . Figure 1. NIH definition of women's health 49.5% of the world population is female and in the United States, women generally live longer and healthier lives than men. However, women still face a variety of health issues. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines women’s health as diseases or conditions related to women (Figure 1). This includes not just physical, but also emotional well-being. In 2019, the leading causes of female deaths were heart disease and cancer (breast and cervical). Other women's health concerns include mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, or reproductive health issues like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, or sexually transmitted infections. Women have different symptoms (vs men) Although women and men can be diagnosed with the same medical conditions, women often experience different symptoms compared to men (e.g. stroke, chest pain, and stress). Due to the difference in symptoms, early health screenings are crucial to women’s health. Important Health Screenings for Women With limited healthcare services available and fear of exposure during the COVD-19 pandemic, 36% of adults either delayed or canceled their healthcare visits. Health screenings can help detect disease when it is treatable as well as prevent serious long-term issues that can develop if left unchecked. The table below shows suggested health screenings for women at various ages. Reproductive Stages of Women’s Health One part of women’s health focuses on gynecological and reproductive health since women experience health events that males do not. These involve menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause. Learn more about the different reproductive cycles women go through in the table below. - Are Diabetic Medications Vegan-Friendly?
What is Diabetes Mellitus? Most of the food we consume is broken down into glucose (sugar) and released into our bloodstream. Our body utilizes sugar as an energy source with the help of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas to help deliver glucose into our cells. However, when the body doesn't produce enough insulin or fails to respond normally to it, a condition called diabetes mellitus occurs. This leads to an accumulation of sugar in the blood. Diabetes mellitus can be classified into three types: Type 1 diabetes mellitus: The body doesn’t make enough insulin due to autoimmune destruction of the pancreatic beta cells. Without an adequate amount of insulin, blood sugar levels become elevated. Approximately 5-10% of people with diabetes have type 1 diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetes mellitus: The body fails to respond normally to insulin and becomes resistant to the effects of insulin. As a result, insulin is not utilized properly, and blood sugar levels become difficult to control. Around 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes mellitus. Gestational diabetes: Diabetes that occurs in pregnant women who have never had diabetes. Approximately 2-10% of pregnant women are affected by gestational diabetes every year. Gestational diabetes usually resolves after childbirth; however, the mother is at an increased risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus later in life. For the purpose of this post, we will primarily focus on type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus, as these two conditions typically require ongoing medication management. Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus There are several blood tests available to help detect diabetes mellitus. If the initial lab results indicate the possibility of diabetes, a definitive diagnosis is typically made after the patient undergoes a second test, and the results consistently indicate the presence of diabetes. Blood Glucose Goals For patients with diabetes, it is important to maintain blood sugar levels within a normal range to prevent the occurrence of long-term complications. What are the Signs and Symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus? If left untreated, diabetes can progressively worsen and lead to severe complications. These complications include recurrent infections, vision changes, decreased circulation, peripheral neuropathy (ulceration), and poor dental hygiene. Failure to address the condition can lead to end-stage outcomes such as retinopathy, the need for dialysis, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and amputation. What are the Treatment Options for Diabetes Mellitus? The treatment of diabetes mellitus typically involves a combination of non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic approaches. Non-pharmacologic options primarily revolve around making lifestyle changes: Dietary changes: Avoid or significantly reduce the consumption of foods with high sugar content Utilize the plate method, which consists of dividing a 9-inch diameter plate into the following: ½ nonstarch vegetables, ¼ carbohydrate, and ¼ protein. Accompany meals with water or zero-calorie beverages. Increased exercise/physical activity: Incorporate at least 150 minutes of moderately-intense exercise per week into your routine. This can be achieved by exercising for 20-30 minutes each day, with at least 2 days of exercise involving all major muscle groups. In addition to lifestyle changes, pharmacologic options can be considered to reduce the risk of diabetes and its associated complications. Typically, newly diagnosed patients with type 2 diabetes will begin treatment with metformin (Glucophage, Glucophage XR), an oral tablet that can improve the body’s response to insulin and lower blood sugar levels. Metformin from certain manufacturers has been verified to be animal-free. Other oral medications and insulins may be prescribed in addition to metformin; however, not all of these products are animal-free. Contact our team for information on common oral medications and insulins and their verified animal-free status! Precautions Patients who rely on pharmacotherapy for the management of diabetes should be aware of the potential risk of hypoglycemia, which occurs when the blood sugar level falls too low. Signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia include shakiness, confusion, anxiety, abnormal heart rate, sweating, and hunger. In addition, other common side effects of most diabetes pharmacotherapies include nausea, upset stomach, and headaches. Conclusion Managing diabetes mellitus is a long-term commitment, and our team at Pill Clarity is dedicated to assisting individuals in finding vegan-friendly alternatives for those seeking animal-free medications. However, it is crucial to consult your healthcare provider to determine the most suitable treatment plan for you, as not all medications are suitable for everyone, and individualized approaches are necessary. We have done independent research and verified with manufacturers to confirm the source of medications listed on our webpage. - Are There Vegan Digestive Supplements?
The consequences of poor food choices can lead to diabetes, improper nutrition, digestive problems, and other health concerns. In response to counteracting these issues, fitness industries flood social media platforms to offer exercise as a remedy. Although the solution to a healthier diet is bandaging the increasing overweight population in the United States, many pursue digestive enzymes as an aid to break down those fatty foods. Of the billions of dollars that corporations spend, are any of these digestive supplements animal-free? "Around 5.3 million people in the United States take non-prescription digestive enzymes." What Are Digestive Enzymes? And How Do They Help? Your body is a highly complex organ system that requires nutrients as an energy source to function. Once food enters your stomach, it is disassembled and fragmented into smaller components that your body can absorb as nutrients. These include macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, as well as micronutrients, like vitamins and minerals. Digestive enzymes play a critical role in breaking down these nutrients, and without them, you may experience poor digestion and malnutrition. This, in turn, can lead to a host of other health complications, including but not limited to diabetes, heart disease, vision problems, and other severe conditions. How Do I Know If I Need Digestive Supplements? When there is an insufficient amount of digestive enzymes in your body, it is unable to break down foods properly. If you're uncertain whether this is affecting you, seeking guidance from your physician and obtaining lab work can provide clarity. Additionally, if you're experiencing any symptoms listed on the left, discussing them with your physician is recommended. This can help determine if digestive supplements may be appropriate for your individual needs. Are There Any Animal-Free Digestive Supplements? ABSOLUTELY! The options for animal-free digestive supplements are extensive. At Pill Clarity, our team has verified a variety of these products. Below are some of our available animal-free digestive supplements: Isotonix Digestive Enzyme Promotes digestion and absorption of nutrients Contains multiple digestive enzymes Breaks down complex sugars, lactose, fats, and more Deva Vegan Digestive Support Helps with digestion and absorption Contains multiple digestive enzymes and dietary supplements Breaks down starch, fats, proteins, and more Enzymedica Betaine HCL Helps break down protein Contains an enzyme called protease Encourages soothing relief and digestive health Conclusion Digestive enzymes play a VERY important role in breaking down the food you eat. It is extremely difficult to know if you are deficient in digestive enzymes unless you take the time to evaluate what you eat. Most obvious signs are related to feeling bloated, stomach aches, flatulence, and diarrhea/constipation. Visit your primary care physician if you think you need digestive supplements. - What is Fabry disease?
Fabry disease, also known as Anderson-Fabry disease, is a rare genetic disorder that affects many organs and systems in the body. It is caused by a deficiency of an enzyme called alpha-galactosidase A (AGA), which leads to a buildup of a fatty substance called globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) in various cells and tissues. The buildup of Gb3 can cause damage and problems in the affected organs, leading to a variety of symptoms and complications. What are the symptoms and diagnosis of Fabry disease? Fabry disease is inherited in an X-linked pattern, meaning that it primarily affects males. Females who inherit the mutated gene can also be affected but often have milder symptoms. The severity of symptoms can vary widely between individuals, even within the same family. Symptoms can begin in childhood or adolescence and may include: Pain and burning sensations in the hands and feet Skin rashes Corneal opacities (scarring of the clear front layer of the eye) Gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain or diarrhea Hearing loss Kidney problems Cardiac abnormalities such as irregular heartbeats, heart attacks, and heart failure The diagnosis of Fabry disease is often delayed because many of the symptoms are nonspecific and can mimic other conditions. However, it is important to diagnose and treat the disease early to prevent or delay the onset of complications. The diagnosis is made by measuring the activity of AGA in the blood or through genetic testing to identify mutations in the GLA gene, which provides instructions for making the AGA enzyme. What drugs are used to treat Fabry disease? Treatment of Fabry disease typically involves enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), where a synthetic version of the missing enzyme is given through intravenous infusion. ERT can help reduce the accumulation of Gb3 and improve symptoms and quality of life. Other treatments may include medications to manage pain, blood pressure, and other symptoms, as well as lifestyle modifications such as a low-fat diet and regular exercise. There are currently three drugs on the market for Fabry Disease: Fabrazyme (agalsidase beta) from Sanofi, Galafold (migalastat hydrochloride) from Amicus Therapeutics, and the recently approved Elfabrio (pegunigalsidase alfa-iwxj) from Chiesi and Protalix. Drug Name Fabrazyme Galafold Elfabrio Manufacturer Sanofi Amicus Therapeutics Chiesi/Protalix Active Ingredient Agalsidase beta Migalastat hydrochloride Pegunigalsidase alfa-iwxj Inactive Ingredients Mannitol, sodium phosphate monobasic, monohydrate, and sodium phosphate, dibasic, heptahydrate Shellac, magnesium stearate, starch, corn, gelatin, FD&C Blue No. 2, titanium dioxide, ferrosoferric oxide, potassium hydroxide Anhydrous citric acid, sodium chloride, sodium citrate, and water for injection Indication Treatment of adult and pediatric patients 2 years of age and older with confirmed Fabry disease Treatment of adults with a confirmed diagnosis of Fabry disease and an amenable galactosidase alpha gene (GLA) variant based on in vitro assay data Treatment of adults with confirmed Fabry disease Side Effects Upper respiratory tract infections Chills Pyrexia Headache Cough Paresthesia Fatigue Peripheral edema Dizziness Rash Headache Nasopharyngitis Urinary tract infection Nausea Pyrexia Abdominal pain Back pain Cough Diarrhea Epistaxis Infusion-associated reactions Nasopharyngitis Headache Diarrhea Fatigue Nausea Back pain Pain in extremity Sinusitis *For full prescribing information, visit https://www.fabrazyme.com/ , https://www.galafold.com/ , and https://elfabrio.com/ Is there an animal-free treatment option for Fabry disease? Yes! There is at least one animal-free treatment option - contact our team for more information! Conclusion Fabry disease is a rare genetic disorder that can cause a range of symptoms and complications. However, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage the disease and improve patients’ quality of life. It’s also important to note that advances in technology and research have led to the development of new animal-free option for patients. One product even uses plant cell culture to make a chemically modified version of the recombinant alpha-galactosidase-A protein. We are excited to see more animal-free treatments being developed, and we will continue to support and promote companies that prioritize animal welfare and environmental sustainability in their research and development efforts! - Vegan-friendly Opioids for Pain Control
What are Opioids? Opiate analgesics are a class of medications that are derived from the opium poppy plant. Commercially available opioids include natural opiates such as morphine and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, which is 50-100 times more potent than morphine. Opioids are generally safe when they are taken as prescribed by a healthcare provider and used over a short period of time. Types of Pain Treated with Opioids Opioids are usually prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain in different settings. Examples of pain conditions where opioids may be prescribed include: Acute Pain Pain that lasts for a short period of time and has a known cause, such as surgery, infection, injury, or trauma. Chronic Pain Pain that lasts 3 months or more and can be caused by a health condition, medical treatment, inflammation, or unknown reasons. Terminal Illness Pain that stems from advanced stages of diseases, such as cancer. How Are Opioids Prescribed? Prescribers will work closely with patients to assess their pain, goals for improvement, benefits, and risks before initiating certain therapies. There are many pain assessment tools in place, but the most commonly used is a Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) that ranges from 0 to 10, with 0 for no pain and 10 for maximum pain. The choice of opioids will vary depending on the type and severity of pain to safely reduce pain and increase the ability to perform daily activities. Once a medication and treatment plan is determined, morphine milligram equivalent (MME) dosages are utilized to assess the overdose potential of a specific opioid at a given time. MME serves as a valuable tool for comparing the strengths of different opioids in relation to morphine. The risk of overdose and death increases with higher daily MME dosages. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), dosages greater than or equal to 50 MME/day increase the risk of overdose by at least two-fold compared to dosages at or below 20 MME/day. Generally, pain management regimens above 90 MME/day do not yield additional pain reduction benefits without significantly increasing the patient's risk for overdose and death. What Are the Common Side Effects of Opioids? Common Side Effects & Precautions Nausea Dizziness Constipation Headache Sedation/Somnolence Nausea/Vomiting Respiratory Depression Tolerance/Dependence/Addiction Taking opioids as directed by your prescriber is imperative to avoid overdose and death. Are Opioids Animal-Free? There are a variety of opioids available on the market from different manufacturers.
