  • Meet the Team: Teresa Henry

Why did you join the Pill Clarity team? My background is in biological sciences specializes in conservation and ecology. I stumbled into Pill Clarity accidentally through an acquaintance of mine and really appreciated their mission. Some of my family members are vegan and have always struggled finding animal-free medications. On another level, I appreciate an emphasis on animal-free medication in a conservation aspect. Most animal-free products are more sustainable and environmentally friendly. I'm excited to have the opportunity to bring my background and experience to the team. What is your favorite animal-free product? It's hard to choose a favorite animal-free product. My family and I have been making a concerted effort to reduce our use of single-use plastics and plastic consumption in general. Most of the products we have switched to are animal-free, including bamboo toothbrushes . What was the most shocking thing you discovered about the pharmaceutical industry when you started working here? The most shocking thing I discovered is how clever manufacturers can be to make a product sound animal-free while not actually being animal-free. There is such a liberal use of the term "plant-based", which, to the normal consumer, would make the product seem like it does not contain animal products. As a result, I've found myself reading a lot more labels on my own products than before. What are you doing to help pass the time while sheltering-in-place? When I'm not working, I've spent my time pursuing my hobbies, such as cooking, reading, skating and biking, sewing, and video games. The time at home has also given me a chance to work more with my rescue lizard, a bearded dragon named Yona. #TeamPillClarity #aboutus #pillclarity #goanimalfree #healthylifestyle Disclaimer: The product and/or information provided on Pill Clarity is of a general nature and is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. • Why Your Bandages Aren't Vegan

Most people probably don’t think twice about whether there are animal products in a band-aid when they go to put one on. But believe it or not, that's the exact question we should be asking. Most bandages, including Band-Aid's most popular bandage, may contain animal ingredients! Bandages, unlike medications and supplements, don't list their ingredients, so it's difficult to determine which of the products are animal-free and which are not. Some of the ingredient lists we've found include beeswax and glycerin...who knew? This problem is bigger than just animal-free concerns. There is a concern for people with allergies, too. While most bandage packaging will tell the consumer if the product is latex-free or not, they neglect to mention if the product is fragrance-free. Luckily, Pill Clarity is there doing the footwork for you! Our experts have been in contact with various companies to gain verification on animal-free bandages. Band-Aid is one of the most popular bandage companies in the industry. Johnson and Johnson, Band-Aid's parent company, recently assured us their Band-Aid Skin Flex bandages are free of animal products. These bandages are known for their lightweight cross-fibers that stretch and flex with your skin. As a known and trusted brand, Skin Flex follows suit with Band-Aid's quality assurance. PATCH is an Australian company that specializes in bamboo, bio-degradable bandages. These bandages use a combination of bamboo fibers, coconut oil, and aloe vera to create an eco-friendly, animal-free bandage. They are also fragrance-free, making them a versatile, reliable product for people with sensitive skin and allergy concerns. Check out our multiple PATCH products on our First-Aid shopping page! • Do Vegan Pain Relievers Exist?

The simple answer is yes! Finding vegan and animal-free products is easy if you go through the Pill Clarity shop . We have done the research to verify which products do not contain any animal ingredients. The prevalence of animal-derived ingredients in pain relief medication makes it difficult for vegans to find effective pain management. From gelatin to shellac, ingredient labels are confusing and convoluted ( read HERE for more information about animal-derived ingredients ). Complicating matters, due to current regulations, animal testing is often used in the development of medications, supplements, and cosmetics. Veganism adheres to avoiding all forms of animal exploitation, so many medications on the market are not vegan. Our goal at Pill Clarity is to find and support animal-free options, medications that do not contain any animal-derived ingredients, since "vegan" labeling may not always be appropriate. Learn more about why "vegan medicine" does not always mean vegan and why we use the term "animal-free." There are different types of treatments depending on the type of pain. Please speak to your healthcare professional regarding all medical decisions. Oral Pain Relief Taking a tablet, capsule, or liquid by mouth is the most common form of pain relief. Many consumers choose over-the-counter options such as acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen or naproxen. Both acetaminophen and NSAIDs reduce fever and address pain caused by muscle aches and stiffness, but NSAIDs specifically target inflammation (Felson). " NSAIDs relieve pain by reducing the production of prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances t hat cause pain (Felson)." The Pill Clarity team has verified that Advil Dual Action with Acetaminophen is animal-free. According to Haleon, these tablets "work fast for headache relief, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain relief, muscle aches, back pain, and the aches and pains associated with the common cold." For children, Children's Advil Pain Reliever and Fever Reducer is a liquid ibuprofen formula, available in white grape flavor to make it easier for your child to take. According to the manufacturer, this medication provides "unsurpassed fever relief among OTC pain relievers/fever reducers for up to 8 hours ." Pediatric dosing is weight-based, so please confirm the medication choice and dosing with your pediatrician. For further reading on animal-free oral pain relief, check out " Is Tylenol Vegan? " and " Is Ibuprofen Vegan? " Topical Pain Relief Topical pain relief, also called topical analgesics, includes lotions, gels, creams, patches, and sprays that are applied directly to the skin. Topical pain relievers work best for acute musculoskeletal pain, like sore muscles, arthritis, or sprains and strains (Cleveland Clinic 2019). Active ingredients used in topical analgesics vary greatly depending on the intended purpose of the product. One of Pill Clarity's most popular topical analgesic is Mentholatum Original Ointment . Mentholatum's active ingredients are natural camphor and menthol, which is also known as mint camphor. Mint camphor creates a cooling sensation to the applied area, tricking the brain into thinking that the skin or body temperature is dropping. This desensitizes nerve endings and decreases arterial blood flow (Cleveland Clinic 2019). • Ashwagandha...the Vegan Fountain of Youth?

W hat is ashwagandha? Ashwagandha ( Withania somnifera ) is an evergreen shrub that grows in India, the Middle East, and part of Africa. This Indian herb, commonly known as "Indian Winter Cherry" or "Indian Ginseng," has been used since 6000 BC in traditional Ayurveda Indian medicine (Pandit, et al 2013). Ayurveda medicine uses natural herbs, diets, and exercise to address health and mental concerns (NCCIH 2019). Within Ayurveda medicine, ashwagandha is a Rasayana, traditionally used to address a number of ailments, including arthritis, insomnia, stress, fevers, and snake bites. While it has been used for centuries, research is still being conducted to support a significant positive effect of ashwagandha across a broad spectrum. Current data suggests that ashwagandha is effective in increasing stamina, preserving memory, relieving stress, and protecting against free radicals (Singh, et al. 2011). What does ashwagandha do? Physical Endurance Studies conducted on rats concluded that ashwagandha increases endurance. Rats treated with ashwagandha before taking a swimming physical endurance test were able to swim for twice the amount of time as rats in the control group. Researchers believe that the anti-stress properties of ashwagandha increases physical endurance. Ashwagandha reduces the increase of adrenal cortisol and ascorbic acid during physical activities (Singh, et al. 2011). In 2012, researchers studied the effects of ashwagandha on elite cyclists for 8 weeks. They concluded that the supplement improved the cyclists' anaerobic capacities, endurance, and strength (Shenoy, et al.). Memory/Intellectual Capacity Ashwagandha belongs to a sub-group of Ayurvedic Rasayana called Medhyarasayanas, referring to mental/intellectual capacity. Ashwagandha was traditionally used to promote the intellect and memory of children and the elderly. Researchers are currently studying ashwagandha in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and Huntington's Diseases. A significant piece of these neurodegenerative diseases is the death of neurites, which are projections off neurons. Ashwagandha slows, stops, reverses, or removes neuritic atrophy and synaptic loss with significant success (Bhattacharya et al. 1995, Singh, et al. 2011) . Anxiety, Depression, and Stress Research suggests that ashwagandha has a calming effect on anxiety, similar to lorazepam (a sedative and anxiety medication). A study published in Phytomedicine found that both ashwagandha and lorazepam reduced the levels of tribulin (a marker of clinical anxiety) in rats. Furthermore, ashwagandha exhibited antidepressant effects on rat subjects, comparable to imipramine (Bhattacharya et al. 2000). Studies conducted with humans found similar results. Chandrasekhar, et al. (2012) conducted a study of 64 human participants with similar results. They were randomized to take either a placebo or a capsule of 300 mg of high-concentration full-spectrum ashwagandha root extract. Researchers administered three stress assessments before and after the study: the PSS questionnaire, the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire, and the 28-item version of the General Health Questionnaire. These assessments tested stress across four categories: somatic, anxiety and insomnia, social dysfunction, and severe depression. The assessments found that the treatment group had significantly reduced stress across all categories compared to the placebo group. On top of all of that, there is a wide range of ongoing research into the benefits of ashwagandha, including blood pressure reduction, inflammation decrease, and potential anti-cancer properties (Goldman 2016). Bottom line is that ashwagandha is an herb with multiple potential health benefits in mental health, physical health, and fostering a higher quality of life. The Pill Clarity team recognized the importance of ashwagandha for many people and found animal-free options for you to try! • Is Aspirin Vegan?

The search for aspirin products without animal-derived ingredients can be long and arduous. Scanning label after label only to be stopped by "magnesium stearate" or "shellac." You can develop a headache just in the process of finding a suitable pain reliever! "Do vegan pain relievers exist?" Our team of pharmacists have scoured through thousands of products to find a handful that do not contain animal ingredients. Earlier this year, we found animal-free ibuprofen and animal-free acetaminophen . We are stoked to be able to add animal-free aspirin to the list! Bayer introduced modern aspirin in 1899. However, the base ingredient, salicylic acid derived from willow bark, has been used for centuries. The ancient Egyptians to the ancient Greeks used willow leaves and bark to relieve minor aches and pains. Willow bark faded into obscurity for a time, but in the 18th century, a clergyman named Edward Stone rediscovered the pain-relieving properties of willow bark. Salicylic acid was isolated as the active ingredient by Hermann Kolbe in 1874 and administered to his patients in large doses. His patients experienced severe side effects ranging from vomiting, nausea, and even comas. It was later discovered that the high acidity of salicylic acid causes hemorrhaging in the stomach wall. When Bayer developed aspirin they modified salicylic acid to create acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The side effects from this new compound were less severe than the original salicylic acid. As aspirin is digested, the acetylsalicylic acid breaks down into salicylic acid, which is then absorbed into the bloodstream. Buffers added to the medicine help regulate the acidity of salicylic acid, reducing side effects, notably GI bleeds. According to WebMD , aspirin is used to "reduce fever and relieve mild to moderate pain from conditions such as muscle aches, toothaches, common cold, and headaches. It may also be used to reduce pain and swelling in conditions such as arthritis." Since 1899, longer-acting and better-tolerated over-the-counter medications such as Advil (ibuprofen, Nurofen, Motrin), Tylenol (acetaminophen, paracetamol), and Aleve (naproxen) were developed, reducing the demand for aspirin. Today, aspirin is primarily used for its anti-platelet properties to prevent recurring heart attacks and strokes. Pill Clarity has identified two aspirin products that are free of animal ingredients! Bayer Aspirin 325mg Coated Tablets This higher strength aspirin product is intended to relieve minor aches and pains. The coated tablets decrease stomach irritation. Ingredients: Aspirin 325mg, Corn Starch, Hypromellose, Powdered Cellulose, Triacetin Pill Clarity has certified ONE animal-free aspirin product: GenCare Aspirin Low dose aspirin is commonly used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in individuals at high risk for cardiovascular events. • Vegan Camping and Backpacking

It's summer! Sunny days, gorgeous weather, and the kids are out of school. Covid-19 has put a crimp in most summer plans, but many people are able to maintain social distancing in campgrounds and on the trails. Here are some tips and tricks to have the perfect vegan camping trip! Hiking Shoes There are many different types of hiking shoes dependent on the type of terrain you will be crossing. If you are backpacking and are carrying a lot of weight, your shoe will need to be stiff and sturdy to help support the extra load. If you are doing low-key hiking with a light day bag, you shoe will likely be more lightweight and flexible. Many hiking shoes incorporate leather into the shoe construction. Leather is a highly durable material that will stretch and mold to the wearer's feet as they break in the shoe. For generations, leather was seen as the ideal material in hiking boot construction. As shoe technology advanced, many shoe companies have transitioned to include vegan-friendly options for hiking shoes. These shoes are usually made from synthetic material, usually polyester, nylon, and synthetic leather. Synthetic leather is made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Sheets of the polymer are heat-stamped together in a leather grain mold to form the fabric sheets. Hiking shoes made from these synthetic materials tend to be more light-weight, have a shorter break-in period, and are more breathable. However, the shoes don't have the same durability as leather. All shoes will fit differently! If you are gearing up for a more intense hike, please talk to a shoe specialist to get the right type of shoe that fits well. An ill-fitting shoe, especially one used under heavy weight or over technical terrain, can cause injury. Speak to a specialist for more information. Read HERE for more in-depth information about synthetic hiking shoes and brand recommendations. Safety is important! Don't forget your first aid kit! The key to staying healthy and safe on a hike is to be prepared for anything with a well-stocked first aid kit. Before going on your adventure, make sure that you double check that your kit is stocked and not expired. REI Expert Advice has a handy check list to make sure you're ready! It can be an added challenge to create a completely animal-free kit. Animal-derived ingredients hide in everything from bandages and compression wraps to pain relievers and antiseptics. We have not found a complete ready-made animal-free kit (yet), but we have tracked down the different components you'll need to be safe! Here are some of our most popular first aid items! Bandages Some bandages are made from bamboo instead of latex, making them both animal-free AND environmentally friendly! Click HERE for more information about bandages (and if they're vegan!). Pain Relievers It's a good idea to have a pain reliever of some form in your first aid kit for that inevitable sprained ankle. Like many over-the-counter medications, most pain relievers contain animal-derived ingredients like lactose, magnesium stearate, and gelatin. However, there are vegan-friendly pain relief options! Antiseptic When you're out in the back country, you're bound to get scratches. It's important to fight infection, so you'll want to disinfect it quickly. Read HERE for more information about vegan first aid kits. Head HERE to peruse our selection of Animal-Free First Aid Products. Vegan Camping Food You spent a full day exploring the outdoors. Hiking trails! Swimming in mountain lakes! Bird watching! Now you're back at camp and starving! It seems like an eternity since lunch! So, my vegan adventurer, what are you going to make for dinner? There are so many options for food in the back country, but meal planning can be roughly broken down into two main types: dehydrated food and back country cooking. Dehydrated Food This is one of the simplest ways to prepare meals. All you need to do is add (usually boiling) water, stir, and let the meal sit for a set period of time. Dehydrated meals used to be known for being tasteless, akin to military MREs (meal, ready-to-eat). Fortunately for campers and backpackers, dehydrated food has come a very long way. There's a wide variety of meals from which to choose, including curry, pad thai, herb mushroom risotto, and three bean chili mac! Dehydrated food is a go-to for most backpackers because it is lightweight and compact. Weight and space is a premium when you're carrying everything on your back! You can find dehydrated food online and in most camping stores. Many people will often make their own dehydrated meals. See HERE for more information on dehydrating meals. Back County Cooking Cooking in your regular kitchen requires planning and forethought, so much so when you cook in the back country. If you choose to cook your meals, you'll want to make sure that you have all of your ingredients and cooking utensils ahead of time. As you plan your meals, take time to research your campground ahead of time. Will you be able to cook on a campfire (keep in mind that campfires are illegal in several states during the summer)? Is there a BBQ grill at your disposal? What type of camping stove will you need to bring? Back country cooking can be as complicated or as simple as you choose. It ranges from making pancakes from a mix to pasta or curry meals. It is important to be aware of the longevity of ingredients, especially if you are using fresh ingredients. If they need to be on ice, look ahead to see if your campground provides ice. Otherwise, you'll want to make those meals first. Here are some favorite Vegan Camping Recipes: 1. Foil packets : These packets are easy to make and are delicious! Fold your favorite veggies and tofu into a foil packet, often with a sauce or marinade, and put it on the grill or over a camp fire! Here's a good recipe if you want some inspiration to get started . 2. Campfire Paella Primavera , from One Green Planet Ingredients: 2-3 cups (at least) fresh vegetables, ideally including red bell or pimiento peppers 1 generous glug of olive oil (see note in step 2) 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 small onion or a few scallions, chopped 8 ounces (1 package) seitan chorizo crumbles or chopped vegan protein of your choice 1 cup rice, preferably short grain, but any kind will work 1 32-ounce box of vegetable broth a splash of wine (optional) a pinch of saffron (optional) salt and pepper to taste Directions: If you have the time, it’s not about to rain, and you want to pull out all the stops, begin by grilling the veggies whole on a grate over the fire. If using peppers, cook until the skin is black and charred. Once cool, wipe off the charred skin with a paper towel, remove seeds, and cut into strips. For other veggies, grill until tender, with blackened grill marks, and chopped into bite sized bits. Set veggies aside. Or, if you want to keep it simple, just chop raw vegetables and set aside. Add olive oil to a cast iron skillet until about 1/8 inch deep all around and set on a grate over the hottest part of the fire. Add garlic and onions and sauté until soft, moving the pan to a cooler part of the grate if they start to brown too quickly. Add chorizo or other protein and cook until starting to brown, then stir in uncooked rice. Cook for a few minutes until the rice is coated in oil, and becoming opaque in some spots. Add a splash of wine, if using, and stir until mostly evaporated. Pour in about half the box of broth and add the veggies, if using raw. Stir and season with saffron, salt, and pepper. Place over the hottest part of the fire, and move around the grill as needed to keep it at a simmer, but not a rolling boil. Allow to simmer uncovered until most of the liquid has evaporated or has been absorbed by the rice, usually about 15-30 minutes. Stir in the grilled veggies, being careful not to disturb the bottom layer of rice, which will stick to the pan and burn slightly in order to form the  socarrat,  or smoky, crunchy crust. Add more liquid in roughly quarter-cup splashes as needed until the rice is soft, but toothsome, and then continue simmering until all of the liquid has been absorbed. Adjust seasoning to taste. Scrape up the socarrat using a wooden spoon, and mix throughout the rest of the rice. 3. Middle-Eastern Spiced Chickpeas, from Elizabeth's Kitchen Diary Ingredients: For the sub-ah b'har seven-spice mix: 2 tbsp whole cumin seeds 1 tbsp whole coriander seeds 2 tbsp freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp smoked mild paprika 1 tbsp whole cloves 1 tsp freshly grated nutmeg 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tbsp whole allspice berries For the spiced chickpeas: 4 tbsp sunflower oil 1 large onion 1 tbsp sub-ah b'har 7 spice mix 1 400 gram tin chickpeas in water 100 grams seasonal greens spinach, chard, kale, spicy Chinese greens, etc. sea salt to taste Directions: Place the cumin and coriander seeds in a small, dry pan over a medium heat and toast until the cumin seeds start popping. Transfer the toasted seeds to a large mortar and pestle along with the remaining ingredients and grind to a find powder. Transfer to an air tight container and store in a dark cupboard for up to 12 months. To prepare the spiced chickpeas get a good fire going and heat the sunflower oil in your cooking pan. I have a fondness for cast iron, but a camping cooking pot will work or even a Dutch oven suspended on a tripod will do. Gently sauté the onions until they begin to soften. The time this takes will depend on how hot your fire is and where your pan is located. Add the spice mix and sauté for a further minute or two. Stir in the drained chickpeas and combine well. Make sure the chickpeas are heated thoroughly. Add your greens and sauté until they have just wilted but they still retain some texture. Season to taste and serve immediately. • How to Get Rid of Hemorrhoids...the Vegan Way

What are hemorrhoids? Hemorrhoids are clumps of enlarged blood vessels in the lower rectum and anus area that help control bowel movements. Hemorrhoids only become problematic when they are enlarged. As hemorrhoids swell, they stretch the outer walls of the veins, which cause irritation and pain. What are hemorrhoid symptoms? According to Dr. Charles Patrick Davis , hemorrhoid symptoms include: Itching Mucus discharge Burning at the anus Severe pain Sensation that the bowel is not really empty Bleeding without pain What causes enlarged hemorrhoids? Enlarged hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are a common ailment. Three out of four adults will develop enlarged hemorrhoids, with a peak between the ages of 45 and 65 years. As we age, the tissues that support hemorrhoid veins begin to stretch and weaken, increasing the likelihood of irritation. Contributing factors to irritating hemorrhoids include: Obesity Pregnancy Standing or sitting for long periods Straining on the toilet Chronic constipation or diarrhea Eating a low-fiber diet Coughing Sneezing Vomiting Holding your breath while straining to do physical labor How to prevent hemorrhoids According to Mayo Clinic , the easiest way to prevent hemorrhoid irritation is to take measures to keep your stools soft. The easier stools pass through your system, the less pressure is placed on hemorrhoids. Here are some tips to stay healthy: Eat high fiber food: Fruits and many vegetables are high in fiber. Mayo Clinic recommends adding fiber to your diet slowly to avoid complications with gas. Stay hydrated Exercise: An active lifestyle prevents constipation and, as a result, reduces pressure on the veins. A healthy exercise regime will help you prevent and manage obesity. Learn more about Vegan Sports Nutrition HERE . Avoid long periods of sitting . A typical American day involves long stretches of sitting. Sitting for too long increases pressure on veins. From sitting in school to behind a desk, it can be easy to forget to move. According to the New York Times , stretching and walking breaks not only help prevent hemorrhoids but also "lifts moods, reduces lethargy and improves overall health." Vegan-friendly ways to treat hemorrhoids Inflamed hemorrhoid longevity differs from person to person. For some, smaller hemorrhoids may go away on their own. Dr. Charles Davis summarizes the issue: “Many people are embarrassed to go to their doctor about their hemorrhoid problems, which is probably why only an estimated 4% of people see the doctor even if 75% of us experience enlarged hemorrhoids at some point in time. Despite the embarrassment, hemorrhoids should always be examined professionally. Getting a medical exam will help your doctor recommend an effective treatment and will also help to rule out more serious causes for your symptoms.” Fortunately, there are many animal-free over-the-counter medications that help relieve pain and treat irritated hemorrhoids. That means that bamboo farming is more sustainable than other wood, such as oak and maple. According to Core 77 , " Unlike trees which need to be cut down, bamboo can be harvested without damaging the original plant, and it then regenerates in three to five years. None of this waiting-around-for-30-years for your reforestation project to kick in." On top of that, bamboo generates 35% more oxygen than comparable trees. That's a pretty great reason to switch to a bamboo toothbrush! Click HERE to Order Now on Amazon! Happy Eco-Natural Dental Floss We get it! It's important to floss daily! • The Wonder Plant: Aloe Vera Benefits

Aloe vera is one of the oldest recorded medicinal plants. According to the Aloe Vera Medical Group International , "The earliest documentation of Aloe was discovered on the clay boards from Nippur which date back as long ago as 2,200 BC. The people of this era were already aware of the cleansing effect of aloe on the intestines, in this period of history illnesses were always regarded as demonic possession of the body and only a divine plant such as aloe had the natural power to exorcise the demons." Aloe vera use spread across the ancient world, to Egypt, China, and across Europe. As trade routes and exploration grew, aloe vera made its way into the Americas. The plant grew in importance worldwide. Today, it is a common ingredient in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries with an estimated global market value of $13 billion. Aloe vera's popularity can be easily linked to its diversity: it is regularly used in first aid, dental care, cosmetics, hygiene, and skin care. Nutrient: contains many vitamins, minerals, and amino acids and is often included in health supplements. Salve for wounds, burns, and sores: many antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties helps aloe vera heal wounds quickly and efficiently. In addition to protecting wound sites from infection, aloe vera also prevents redness and discomfort. Mouthwash: studies out of Oral Health Dental Management and the Ethiopian Health Science Journal suggested that aloe vera can act as an effective mouthwash in reducing dental plaque. The antibacterial properties of aloe vera combat the formation of plaque while the vitamins and minerals in aloe vera provide relief for swelling and bleeding gums. Skincare: aloe vera's quick skin absorption makes it a key ingredient in many moisturizers and cosmetics. Given the huge range of applications, you are very to find aloe vera in your personal care products. However, many of those products also include animal-derived ingredients...check out our marketplace for our favorite, animal-free , aloe vera products! • DAGUA: Sustainable and Certified Animal-Free!

One of our favorite parts of Pill Clarity is meeting inspirational people who are committed to an animal-free world. Our newest friend is Adriana Velásquez, founder of Dagua. Dagua was founded in California in 2017 with the idea of spreading environmental and health consciousness among the community with high-quality, eco-friendly goods. We have certified two products with Dagua - clove soap and an eco-friendly bamboo toothbrush. We are in love with these products and hope you love them too! Want to know more about the woman behind the brand? We sat down with Adriana to bring you the full story of DAGUA! Dagua was inspired by your grandmother, who made handcrafted goods. Do Dagua products originate from her recipes and designs? What is your inspiration for new products? Yes, my grandmother, Nativa, made all kinds of handcrafts. Dagua is the name of the small town in Colombia were she was born, and I always liked it because it sounds like agua (water). The main products inspired by my grandmother are the tagua necklaces. They are made by a group of women in Bogotá Colombia. She always helped people, so my main goal with Dagua is helping less privileged communities by giving them job opportunities. She died at 97 still making necklaces and knitting beautiful bags that she gave to friends and family :).   I saw that you are a marine biologist. How has this background helped you in Dagua? Yes, currently I'm doing a PhD about the green turtle of Hawaii. During the necropsies of the turtles I saw that many of them died because or with a lot of plastic in their intestines. That's really sad to see because it's completely preventable. That was the reason for the bamboo toothbrush and the organic soaps. It's my small contribution for a better world. My main goal with my products is that the normal public can buy them at affordable prices.  Why is Animal-Free important to you? I have loved and respected animals all my life, and when I was 14 years old I started practicing Shaolin and became a vegetarian. I think the road to a more compassionate world starts with the products we use. We are all animals sharing this planet Earth. Is there anything else you would like us to know? My husband and I just started a foundation called "Mariposa Ranch Foundation" in Agua Dulce, California that focuses on educating the community about coexisting peacefully with the local wildlife (specially coyotes, rattlesnakes, scorpions and other animals most people fear and think they don't like). I'm still adding to the website, but we would love for everyone to check it out: mariposaranchfoundation.com.   Are you as excited to use these products as we are?!?! Check them out below: DAGUA Herbal Soap This herbal soap is not only Certified Animal-Free , but also eco-friendly, zero waste, and cruelty-free . We love the earthy and spicy fragrance from the cloves and rosemary in this soap. Ingredients: 100% certified organic oils, plant extracts, essential oils, and oatmeal. NO SULFATES, NO DYES, NO PARABENS, NO PRESERVATIVES. Clove is known for its antimicrobial, antifungal and antiseptic properties and has been used for years to treat skin problems. The soap also has a hint of oatmeal to gently exfoliate and cassia and clove for a rich, spicy scent. Soap and eco-friendly packing are made 100% in the USA. No plastic, only recycled paper for labels and box. DAGUA Eco-Friendly Toothbrush This toothbrush is not only Certified Animal-Free , but also eco-friendly, zero waste, and cruelty-free . We love the added charcoal in the bristles so our teeth stay squeaky clean! Ingredients: biodegradable bamboo and BPA-free bristles This toothbrush hasn't been treated with varnish or chemicals, so you need to keep it dry between uses. Bamboo is sustainable because it is biodegradable and fast-growing. Plus, it can be harvested multiple times and doesn't require pesticides or fertilizers (naturally organic). Eco-friendly packing made in the USA. Only recycled paper; never plastic. Welcome to the Certified Animal-Free family, Dagua! • Is the COVID-19 Vaccine Vegan?

The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines have become the first to be approved under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the prevention of COVID-19 disease. The FDA regulatory process for new drug approvals include animal testing during the research phases. Unfortunately, because of this, no medication can truly be labeled as "vegan". The more appropriate labeling would be "animal-free" (i.e., products not containing any animal-derived ingredients). COVID vaccine and animal-derived ingredients So, are either of the COVID vaccines animal-free ? Contact our medical information team to find out! However, note we have not worked with the company directly to independently certify that it is Animal-Free. If you would like Pill Clarity to certify these vaccines, please “like” this post and leave a comment at the bottom. This would be the only way we can be certain that the vaccine is free from any animal-derived ingredients. Through your support, we can push for positive change in the pharmaceutical industry such as reducing its use of animal-derived ingredients in medications. Remember, your health comes first! It's important to remember that the COVID-19 vaccines will play a critical role in managing the pandemic and saving lives. At Pill Clarity, we believe that your health should always come first . After all, how can we continue to advocate for animal welfare if we are not fit and healthy ourselves? To this end, we stand behind the philosophy that veganism should be embraced as far as practically possible. A decision to avoid taking a medication or vaccine can be dangerous and all medical decisions should be made after consulting with your doctor. Frequently Asked Questions What is the difference between a "booster" and "updated COVID vaccine"? Instead of calling an additional dose a “booster,” the FDA has shifted to calling it an updated COVID vaccine . This is similar to an annual flu shot, since the updated vaccine builds a new immune response to current variants rather than boosting previous immunity. The Fall/Winter 2023-2024 season COVID-19 vaccines are monovalent and based on the XBB.1.5 variant which is effective against the majority of the COVID cases in the U.S. Do I need an updated COVID vaccine? If you have already been vaccinated by any COVID vaccine, you are eligible for an updated COVID vaccine (any brand) two months after your last dose. If you have had COVID recently, the infection should provide protection from reinfection. The CDC recommends an updated COVID vaccine 6 months since your symptoms began and 3 months in high-risk groups. If you have never been vaccinated against COVID, the CDC highly recommended for anyone 6 years or older to be up to date on their vaccines. For those who are severely immunocompromised and have received an updated COVID vaccine, you may choose to receive an optional dose 2 months after your last COVID vaccination. What are the COVID-19 vaccines made from? The COVID-19 vaccine ingredients are: Can I track vaccine side effects? The CDC has launched V-safe , an app that uses text messaging and web surveys to provide personalized check-ins after you receive the COVID-19 vaccination. Through V-safe, you can report to the CDC any side effects you may be experiencing after getting the vaccine. Depending on your answers, someone from CDC may even call you for more information. This is a great way for you to contribute to the safe deployment of the vaccine! Can you interchange between Pfizer and Moderna vaccines? The CDC recommends that you keep the same vaccine for your primary series. Children aged 6 months to 4 years should get the same vaccine for their booster, if eligible. Children aged 5 who have received Pfizer-BioNTech primary series should get the updated (or bivalent) Pfizer-BioNTech booster, but those who have received the Moderna primary series can get a different vaccine for their updated (or bivalent) booster. Children and adults ages 6 years and older can get a different vaccine for their updated (or bivalent) booster than the vaccine they got for their primary series or previous booster. Are there any developments towards vegan medications? It is unfortunate that medications require animal testing during the research phases. However, we are encouraged by new developments in alternatives to animal testing . These include in vitro methods and computer simulation models. Although we still have a way to go before we can eliminate animal testing for good, it's important that we continue to work together as a community to advocate for change. Through collectively voicing our concerns with regulators, pharmaceutical companies and medical leaders, we believe there is a path towards positive change. Ingredients within medications are notoriously complicated to understand. Even as pharmacists, we can find it challenging! So what about animal-derived ingredients? We believe it should be easier to determine if your medications are animal-free and that's why we created Pill Clarity. We aim to provide much needed transparency to consumers and to help create a world where medications are completely free from animal-derived ingredients. Importantly, medical bodies are starting to listen. We recently wrote about new recommendations from the American Medical Association (AMA) urging manufacturers for better labeling of animal-derived ingredients and encouraging better cultural awareness regarding patient preferences. We are also encouraged by the efforts of companies like iBio CDMO , who are providing unique plant-based manufacturing methodologies. Note: This post expands on our original post dated 12/17/2020 about the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and includes our recent findings on the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, along with some additional information and FAQs that you might find useful. • Stuck in Suez Canal

What’s happening in the Suez Canal? One of the world’s largest container ships, the Ever Given, became stuck in the Suez Canal on March 23rd, 2021, as a result of high winds and possible human error. Over 400 ships were waiting to be freed, some of which contained live animals. Livestock trade is driven by its use in food and drugs, which is potentially avoidable. How does this affect you? To put things into perspective, approximately 15% of the world’s trade passes through the Suez Canal. If vessels are unable to pass through the Suez Canal, they have to travel around the southern tip of Africa, which is not only a longer trip but a more dangerous one as well. This blockage has cost companies worldwide about $10 billion a day. Several of these ships carry oil, so oil prices are expected to increase over the next few weeks. Shipping prices are also expected to go up due to a decrease in supply. What does this mean for the animals? Thousands of animals are stuck on the ships waiting to pass through the Suez Canal. To make matters worse, cattle, sheep, and other livestock are already stuck in close quarters. Unfortunately, ships typically only carry three days’ worth of extra feed and water. So, if they run out of resources, this can make the situation much worse for the animals. The longer the animals are stuck on board, the greater the risk for starvation, dehydration, and potential build-up of dead carcasses, bringing about inhumane practices. What can we do for the animals now? Here at Pill Clarity, we strive to provide you with the resources to learn what’s inside your products and find alternatives that are animal-free. For example, from the thousands of available painkillers, we have curated the ones that do not contain any animal-derived ingredients - check out our marketplace today!
