  • Exploring Vegan Medications with ChatGPT

In today’s digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our lives, revolutionizing the way we communicate and interact with technology (even creating100% AI art!). One prominent example of AI’s impact on communication is the emergence of conversational agents like ChatGPT. In this blog post, we embark on a fascinating journey- a conversation with ChatGPT itself. Our exploration focuses on the potential, or perhaps the limitations, of utilizing ChatGPT for identifying vegan-friendly medications. Source: DemandSage Statistics It’s important to note that while ChatGPT is undoubtedly an impressive feat of AI engineering, it is essential to acknowledge its limitations. The model's responses are generated based on patterns and correlations present in the training data, which means it may occasionally provide inaccurate or misleading information. It lacks genuine comprehension and contextual understanding, making it prone to factual errors or biased responses. Its knowledge is also up-to-date until September 2021. These limitations highlight the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking when interacting with AI-powered conversational agents. Question : What medications are vegan? ChatGPT Answer : There are various medications that are considered vegan, as they do not contain ingredients derived from animals. However, it's important to note that not all medications have a clear labeling indicating whether they are vegan or not. If you're specifically looking for vegan medications, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional or pharmacist who can provide more detailed information based on your specific needs and dietary restrictions. Question : Can you provide examples of vegan medications? ChatGPT Answer : Certainly! Here are a few examples of medications that are commonly considered vegan: Acetaminophen (paracetamol): A commonly used pain reliever and fever reducer. Ibuprofen: A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for pain relief and reducing inflammation. Metformin: An oral medication used for managing type 2 diabetes. Levothyroxine: A synthetic thyroid hormone used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Simvastatin: A medication used to lower cholesterol levels. Prednisone: A corticosteroid used to treat various inflammatory conditions. Albuterol: A bronchodilator used to relieve symptoms of asthma and other respiratory conditions. It's important to note that formulations and ingredients can vary by brand and country, so it's always recommended to check with a healthcare professional or pharmacist to ensure the specific medication you are considering is suitable for your dietary needs. Question : How would consumers know which NDC (National Drug Code) is vegan? ChatGPT Answer : Determining whether a specific medication is vegan can be challenging for consumers, as this information is not always clearly labeled on the packaging or in the National Drug Code (NDC). Here are a few steps consumers can take to gather information: Consult with healthcare professionals or pharmacists: They can provide guidance and help identify medications that are more likely to be free from animal-derived ingredients based on their knowledge and access to resources. Contact the manufacturer: Reach out to the pharmaceutical company directly and inquire about the specific medication you are interested in. They may be able to provide information about the sourcing of ingredients or any animal-derived components used in the manufacturing process. Check for alternative forms: In some cases, the same active ingredient may be available in different formulations or brands. Researching and comparing different brands or forms of the medication may help in finding options that align with specific dietary preferences. Seek assistance from vegan organizations or resources: Vegan organizations or online communities dedicated to veganism or animal-free products may provide guidance or maintain databases or lists of medications that are more likely to be animal-free. It's important to note that while these steps can provide additional information, determining the animal-free status of a specific medication may still be challenging due to limited transparency in labeling and the complexity of supply chains in the pharmaceutical industry. Question : Where did you get this list of medications? ChatGPT Answer : As an AI language model, my responses are generated based on a mixture of licensed data, data created by human trainers, and publicly available data. I have not been directly trained on specific lists of vegan medications. The examples of medications I provided as potentially vegan were based on general knowledge about commonly used medications and their typical ingredients. Question : How can medications be considered vegan if animal-testing is still used in the drug discovery process? ChatGPT Answer : You raise an important ethical consideration. While some medications may be considered vegan in terms of their ingredients, it's true that many pharmaceuticals undergo animal testing during the drug discovery and development process. This creates a dilemma for individuals who follow a vegan lifestyle but also require medications for their health. The vegan philosophy aims to minimize harm to animals as much as possible. However, the practical reality is that animal testing is still a standard practice in the pharmaceutical industry for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medications before they are approved for human use. In such cases, individuals who follow a vegan lifestyle may choose to prioritize their health needs while advocating for alternative methods to animal testing and supporting efforts to develop more humane testing practices, such as in vitro (cell-based) models and computer simulations. It's a complex and evolving issue, and each person's choices may differ based on their individual beliefs and circumstances. Question : What would be the more accurate term for medications that do not contain animal-derived ingredients vs. using the word vegan? ChatGPT Answer : A more accurate term for medications that do not contain animal-derived ingredients would be "medications without animal-derived ingredients" or "medications free from animal products." Using such terms provides a clear and specific description without relying on the broader connotations of the term "vegan," which encompasses a broader lifestyle choice that goes beyond dietary considerations. By using more precise language, it helps to avoid confusion and accurately convey the information regarding the absence of animal-derived components in medications. Conclusion This conversation reveals that ChatGPT has the ability to learn, adapt, and expand its knowledge. It is both fascinating and encouraging to witness its acknowledgment of the problem we’re trying to solve: the need for improved transparency in labeling animal-free medications. Engaging in a conversation with ChatGPT offers a glimpse into the world of AI-powered communication. While the model exhibits remarkable conversational abilities, it is essential to remember its limitations and approach the interactions with caution. By understanding both the potential and the challenges associated with AI, we can leverage this technology to create meaningful and beneficial experiences. As AI continues to shape our future, it is our responsibility to ensure that it aligns with our values and augments our capabilities as humans. • Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month, observed every May, serves as a crucial reminder to prioritize our mental well-being and advocate for better mental health care. While therapy, self-care practices, and social support are fundamental, medications can also play a significant role in managing mental health conditions. In this blog, we explore the use of prescriptions, medications, and over-the-counter products as tools for supporting mental health. Understanding the Role of Medications Prescriptions and medications, when used appropriately and under professional guidance, can be effective in treating a range of mental health conditions. They are often recommended alongside therapy and lifestyle changes to provide relief from symptoms and enhance the overall quality of life. Medications work by balancing brain chemistry, regulating neurotransmitters, and addressing specific symptoms associated with mental health disorders. Prescription Medications Antidepressants : These medications are commonly prescribed to manage depression, anxiety disorders, and some eating disorders. They help balance neurotransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, alleviating symptoms such as persistent sadness, lack of energy, and changes in sleep patterns. Antipsychotics : Antipsychotic medications are primarily used to treat conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression with psychotic features. They can help manage hallucinations, delusions, and mood instability. Mood Stabilizers : These medications are often prescribed to individuals with bipolar disorder to stabilize mood swings and prevent episodes of mania or depression. Lithium and certain anticonvulsant drugs are commonly used in this category Anxiolytics : Anxiolytics, also known as anti-anxiety medications, are prescribed to alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders. Benzodiazepines and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are commonly prescribed in this category. Over-the-Counter (OTC) Products In addition to prescription medications, several over-the-counter (OTC) products can help promote mental well-being. While they may not be a substitute for professional treatment, they can offer temporary relief from mild symptoms or supplement existing treatment plans. Sleep Aids : Proper sleep is crucial for maintaining good mental health. OTC sleep aids, such as melatonin supplements or herbal remedies like valerian root, can help improve sleep quality and regulate sleep patterns. Herbal Supplements : Certain herbal supplements, like St. John's wort or omega-3 fatty acids, have shown promise in managing symptoms of mild depression and anxiety. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional before incorporating these supplements into your routine, as they can interact with prescription medications. Stress-Relief Products : OTC stress-relief products, such as lavender essential oils, teas with calming properties, or stress balls, can offer short-term relief from stress and anxiety symptoms. These can be helpful as complementary tools alongside other treatment methods. Consulting a Healthcare Professional When considering the use of prescription medications or over-the-counter products for mental health support, it is crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare professional. They can assess your specific needs, provide an accurate diagnosis, and recommend appropriate treatments. A healthcare professional will help determine the most suitable medication, prescribe the correct dosage, monitor potential side effects, and ensure the treatment plan aligns with your overall well-being. Conclusion During Mental Health Awareness Month, we at Pill Clarity want to emphasize the significance of mental well-being and foster open dialogues surrounding mental health care. While prescriptions, medications, and over-the-counter products can be valuable tools in managing mental health conditions, it's crucial to remember that they are just one part of a comprehensive approach. Seeking therapy, implementing self-care practices, and obtaining professional guidance are equally essential components. We recognize that every individual's mental health journey is distinct, and we are here to provide support and resources along the way. Let us be your ally in promoting mental well-being and empowering you to make informed decisions about your mental health care. • What's the difference between THC and CBD?

This post is in collaboration with Apothetique Holistic. All information presented here is not meant to be used to replace traditional individual treatment plans with a qualified healthcare professional. What is Cannabis, and what are the two most abundant cannabinoids? Cannabis (Marijuana) comes from the plant family Cannabaceae, which includes Cannabis Sativa , Cannabis Indica , and Cannabis Ruderalis. These plant species are thought to have originated from Central and Eastern Asia and have been used historically for their psychoactive and healing properties. Cannabis comes in many forms, including dried flowers, leaves, and oils. CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the most commonly used cannabinoids in Cannabis products. In 2019, it is estimated that 48.2 million people in the U.S. used Cannabis at least once. Given the rising popularity of its use, it is essential to understand the potential risks and side effects of cannabinoid products. How do THC and CBD work? Cannabinoids exert their effects by interacting with receptors in various central nervous system regions. THC and CBD are plant-based, whereas anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2AG) are produced naturally in the human body. THC and AEA have structural similarities in activating cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors, creating high dopamine levels and causing euphoria. Conversely, CBD is non-psychoactive and has more therapeutic effects, including pain relief, seizure control, and possibly muscle recovery. CBD activates the 5HT1A receptors and inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and norepinephrine, resulting in anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects. Additionally, CBD prevents adenosine uptake, which has anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. Which has more addiction potential: THC or CBD? THC use may result in substance use disorder and potentially addiction. Approximately 9% (up to 17% for teens) of cannabis users become dependent or addicted, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that THC “ is by far the most widely cultivated, trafficked, and abused illicit drug.” However, their stance on pure CBD is drastically different, claiming that “...cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm.” Therefore, CBD can be considered a safe cannabinoid. “...in its pure state, cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm.” What are the short-term and long-term effects of THC and CBD? The effects of THC and CBD may differ for each individual. Due to the psychoactive nature of THC, the long-term effects can be more detrimental compared to CBD. The most common withdrawal symptoms are anxiety, irritability, anger, disturbed sleep, depression, or loss of appetite. The FDA’s role in cannabis products The FDA’s Cannabis Product Committee (CPC) is currently working to implement a regulatory cross-agency strategy on cannabis-derived products to promote and protect the public's health. The FDA has already approved cannabis-derived prescription medications, Epidiolex (Cannabidiol), Marinol (Dronabinol), and Syndros (Dronabinol). We at Pill Clarity are happy to share that Epidiolex and Syndros are verified to be animal-free. Cannabis-derived prescription drugs Conclusion With increased use of THC and CBD over the past several years, there has also been growth in the number of cannabis-based products to meet consumer demand. Of the two, CBD has been deemed the safer cannabinoid for use due to its low risk for abuse and harm. Due to the public interest in CBD, the FDA is planning to form agencies to surveil the ingredients and safety of products. At Pill Clarity we understand how hard it may be to differentiate ingredients on product labels. We work hard to ensure that we carry only the safest animal-free products on the market. Apothetique Holistic is on a mission to provide pharmacist-led cannabis consultations for medical cannabis patients. They provide safe and effective, clinically proven dosing parameters, and continuous follow-up until the desired effects are achieved. When it comes to the novel use of cannabis, usually as 3rd or 4th line adjuncts to traditional western medications, medical providers are equipped with resources to identify drug interactions or medical condition contraindications, thereby decreasing costs incurred with complications. Most importantly, Apothetique Holistic wants to decrease harm and toxicity from misuse or non-reputable products. They will match you with products that are third-party lab tested, with a certificate of analysis (COA), and good manufacturing practice certified (GMP). They are there for you every step of the way along your healing journey. • Behind the Brand: The Story of 100% PURE

100% PURE is a beauty brand dedicated to clean, effective skincare with a focus on ingredient transparency. Founded by Susie Wang, the brand was born from a personal mission to create safe, ethically sourced products. With a commitment to sustainability, cruelty-free practices, and innovation, 100% PURE stands out by prioritizing purity and transparency in every product. Could you share what inspired the creation of 100% PURE, and how your approach to ingredient transparency sets you apart from other beauty brands? 100% PURE was born from a deeply personal discovery by our founder, Susie Wang. As a young science enthusiast, she realized that many skincare products claiming to be beneficial were, in fact, oxidized, unstable, and filled with harmful ingredients. Her journey began with the innovation of stabilizing Vitamin C to preserve its potency — an invention that later became patented. However, it was during her time formulating products for major cosmetic companies that she uncovered a darker truth: toxic chemicals were common, and misleading claims about animal testing were rampant. This experience led Susie to build a brand grounded in authenticity, ingredient purity, and ethical responsibility. Our approach to ingredient transparency sets us apart because every decision we make — from ingredient selection to formulation processes — is rooted in integrity. We don’t just avoid harmful chemicals; we source ingredients that offer naturally occurring benefits with minimal processing, and we ensure that every ingredient is ethically sourced and cruelty-free. Every 100% PURE product is designed with full transparency, meaning we only use ingredients that benefit the skin. How do you educate customers and raise awareness about ingredient transparency? Education is a cornerstone of our mission at 100% PURE. We raise awareness through multiple channels: detailed blog articles, ingredient spotlights, in-store experiences, newsletters, workshops, and our website’s thorough product descriptions. We explain not just what  is in our products, but why  those ingredients were chosen and how they benefit the skin. Beyond listing ingredients, we share insights about our strict formulation standards — such as cold-pressing methods and biological extraction processes. We also highlight the rigorous 9-step testing process we follow for every product to ensure ingredient purity, formula stability, and product efficacy. Through consistent education, we empower our customers to make informed decisions about the products they use, while helping to elevate standards across the entire beauty industry. What role does sustainability play in your sourcing, packaging, and product development? Sustainability is woven into every aspect of how 100% PURE operates. In our sourcing, we prioritize ingredients that are naturally abundant and require minimal alteration — preserving the integrity of the environment they come from. Our commitment extends to using cold-pressed oils, biodegradable formulas, and naturally derived compounds. In our packaging, we take a comprehensive approach: we use recycled or recyclable materials, eco-friendly non-toxic inks, and biodegradable packing peanuts made from cornstarch. Even our headquarters in San Jose, CA, operates sustainably — powered by solar panels, landscaped with drought-resistant native plants, and awarded the San Jose Green Certificate for having minimal landfill waste. From product development through to shipping, sustainability isn’t an afterthought — it’s a fundamental responsibility. Each decision we make is about minimizing our carbon footprint, preserving natural habitats, and ensuring that beauty never comes at the cost of the planet. Have you faced specific challenges in sourcing pure and ethical ingredients, and how have you navigated these? Sourcing pure and ethical ingredients has always been a significant challenge — especially when we started, as clean beauty was virtually nonexistent in the mainstream market. Many ingredients available at scale were either heavily processed or tested on animals. To navigate these challenges, we built strong, transparent relationships with farmers and suppliers who share our values. We take extra steps to ensure that every raw material is cruelty-free, sustainably harvested, and minimally processed. In fact, every ingredient goes through rigorous testing for purity, potency, and ethical sourcing before being included in any 100% PURE formulation. Rather than compromise on our standards, we’ve invested in innovation — creating our own extraction methods to avoid chemical solvents, and even building a 'Beauty Bakery' lab to ensure full control over ingredient synergy and formulation purity.  Are there any exciting new developments, products, or initiatives you'd like our audience to know about? We’re incredibly excited about the innovations coming out of our Beauty Bakery — our in-house lab where nature meets cutting-edge science. One of our most exciting developments is the expansion of our skincare range featuring advanced botanical actives and natural drug-delivery methods. For example, our Mushroom Peptides Firming Serum  uses 11 medicinal mushrooms and quinoa peptides to visibly boost skin resilience, hydration, and firmness. Another highlight is our Vitamin C Glow Max Bright Mask , designed for those who want potent, fast-acting results using only safe, natural ingredients. With technologies like microencapsulation using natural polymers from natto beans and sweet potatoes, we’re able to deliver deeper penetration of actives while maintaining ingredient purity and stability. We’re also working on a refresh of our giveback initiative, with exciting changes on the horizon. Soon, every 100% PURE customer will be able to choose a charity to support at checkout — allowing each purchase to create a personalized and positive global impact. Whether it’s supporting children in need, protecting animals, or preserving the environment, we’re excited to offer a more meaningful way for our community to give back. However, we’re unable to answer questions through those platforms and you must use the methods listed above for personalized assistance. Navigating Pill Clarity Contact Forms We offer three contact forms: our Live Chat form, Main Contact form, and Prescription Medication form. No matter which form you choose, one of our pharmacists will review and respond to your inquiry. Things to Remember When Submitting an Inquiry Be Specific : Please provide the exact name of the medication you're looking for (e.g., "amoxicillin" rather than "an animal-free antibiotic"). This helps our team respond faster. If your doctor asks for a list of “animal-free antibiotics”, instead ask them for the names of medications that would work for you and our team will identify which medications in that list have animal-free alternatives! For specific medications, provide us the NDC (National Drug Code) if possible. Response Time : We aim to reply within 24 hours, but responses may take longer, especially on weekends. If you don’t hear from us after 3 days, we likely didn’t receive your message. Please feel free to follow up – we’re here for you! We respond to 100% of the messages we receive. Manufacturer Matters : Some brands (e.g., Equate) require specific details such as lot or receipt number to provide ingredient information. Other manufacturers like Bausch & Lomb still require you to contact them directly (yes, we know it’s a pain). So when you call them, tell them to partner with Pill Clarity because it makes sense for all the information to be in one central source. Navigating Our Marketplace : All OTC products in our marketplace are verified or certified as animal-free. Prescription medications listed on our marketplace means we have an animal-free alternative, but you will need to contact us regarding the details . Why? Because formulations change and not every manufacturer makes an animal-free version. Answer Time Estimate : We can’t always provide a precise timeframe for answers, as it depends on our internal database and, in some cases, waiting on the manufacturer. You’re welcome to check back in periodically; that will not bother us. FAQ : For quick answers, check our Frequently Asked Questions section here .  What to do with the Information Pill Clarity Provides When you receive a response from our team, it will include the drug name, manufacturer, National Drug Code (NDC), and its animal-free status. To obtain the animal-free option, you can ask your local pharmacy if they have the specific NDC in stock or if they can order it for you. Alternatively, you can request that your prescriber specify the NDC or manufacturer on your prescription. Pill Clarity is not a licensed pharmacy and we do not fill the prescription ourselves. However, we are partnered with several pharmacies   that are well versed in alpha-gal and can assist you in obtaining your animal-free prescription! • FDA Re-evaluates Popular Cold Medicine: What You Need to Know

The FDA is taking a closer look at phenylephrine, an ingredient commonly found in over-the-counter (OTC) cold medicines like syrups, tablets, and dissolvable powders. This review is focused on effectiveness, not safety, and raises questions about how well oral phenylephrine actually treats nasal congestion — a popular choice for tackling stuffy noses from colds, allergies, or sinus issues. What did the FDA find? After analyzing past and recent studies on oral phenylephrine, the FDA found that these studies did not consistently show that it effectively relieves congestion. Many older studies used a measure called "nasal airway resistance" (NAR) to gauge how well phenylephrine worked. But NAR isn't a reliable measure, as it varies too much from person to person and doesn’t clearly show symptom relief. Newer studies that focused on actual symptom improvement, like how congested people felt, also showed disappointing results for phenylephrine. What is the FDA proposing? Due to limited evidence that oral phenylephrine effectively relieves congestion, the FDA is recommending its removal from the OTC market in tablet and liquid forms. Importantly, this decision does not relate to safety — the review found no new safety concerns with oral phenylephrine. The proposal also does not affect nasal sprays or drops containing phenylephrine, which are still considered effective for congestion relief. Alternatives to Phenylephrine Consumers who rely on OTC cold medicines may soon find fewer products with oral phenylephrine on store shelves. However, there are several effective alternatives for congestion relief, such as: Oral pseudoephedrine Nasal sprays with decongestants, corticosteroids, or antihistamines Additional options include using cool mist humidifiers, saline nose drops, rinses or sprays, and, for children, nasal suctioning with a bulb syringe. These alternatives provide a range of choices to help manage congestion effectively. Phenylephrine vs. Pseudoephedrine Phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine are both common ingredients in decongestants, but they have important differences in effectiveness, availability, and usage. Feature Phenylephrine Pseudoephedrine Effectiveness Mixed evidence on effectiveness in oral form Generally considered effective for nasal congestion Availability Available OTC without restrictions Available behind-the-counter due to regulations Forms Oral tablets, syrups, nasal sprays, eye drops Oral tablets, syrups Side Effects Fewer reports of insomnia, jitteriness May cause increased heart rate, insomnia Mechanism Acts on blood vessels in nasal passages Constricts blood vessels throughout the body Animal-free Options? Yes Yes While phenylephrine is easier to access, pseudoephedrine is generally considered more effective for nasal congestion but is regulated due to potential misuse. Conclusion The FDA’s review of oral phenylephrine raises concerns about its effectiveness as a decongestant, though it remains safe. If removed from OTC options, consumers still have effective alternatives like pseudoephedrine, nasal sprays, and non-medication options. Knowing these choices helps consumers find reliable relief for nasal congestion. • Careers in Pharmacy

Pharmacy is a field that combines science, healthcare, patient interaction, technology, ethics, and business. This means a pharmacy degree can open doors to far more than the typical retail positions, like those at CVS, that many associate with pharmacists. The role of a pharmacist is varied, and how a pharmacy degree is applied can differ greatly across various career paths. How to Obtain a PharmD  A pharmacy degree can be obtained from any AACP-accredited school. Typically, this involves 2 to 4 years of undergraduate study followed by 3 to 6 years of graduate study, with 4 years being standard. Graduates receive a bachelor's in pharmaceutical science and a PharmD, which is required for licensure. To become a licensed pharmacist, candidates must pass the NAPLEX and the state-specific law exam. Do all PharmD graduates need to take board exams? Not all PharmD graduates need to be licensed, depending on their career path. Those aiming to work in traditional pharmacy settings, like retail or hospitals, must pass board exams for licensure. However, there are alternative career options where licensure is not required. Different Pharmacy Careers  There are over 100 career paths available to PharmD graduates, covering diverse fields such as clinical practice, the pharmaceutical industry, technology and health informatics, government roles, and academia. Each career option presents unique opportunities, some requiring further education or experience, allowing pharmacists to apply their expertise in various settings. This growing diversity in career paths enhances the versatility and impact of pharmacy professionals. Pharmacy Practice & Specialty Roles These roles emphasize direct patient care in various clinical settings, including ambulatory care, critical care, and oncology. Pharmacists can specialize in areas like geriatrics and mental health, offering tailored opportunities to meet diverse patient needs. Pharmaceutical Industry Roles Ideal for those with medication expertise and an interest in business or research, these roles include biomedical researchers and medical science liaisons. They apply pharmaceutical knowledge in industry and research settings. Pharmacists at Pill Clarity also fall under this category, leveraging their skills to support medication transparency and patient safety through research and strategic initiatives. Technology & Health Informatics Pharmacy Roles These positions focus on healthcare data and systems, integrating technology into pharmacy practice. Roles like clinical data analyst and health informatics specialist enhance patient care through effective data management. Government & Regulatory Roles Professionals in this field use medication expertise to shape regulations and ensure patient safety. Roles include clinical inspection pharmacists and consumer safety officers, advocating for patient care standards. Academic Pharmacy Roles Focused on educating future pharmacists, these positions include lecturers and residency coordinators. Academics play a crucial role in mentorship and research development in pharmacy education. Non-Traditional Pharmacy Career Roles These roles showcase the diverse industries where pharmacists contribute, including academic detailers and digital therapeutics specialists. They apply their expertise in innovative settings like business consultancy and medical writing. The Role of Pill Clarity in Pharmacy  Pill Clarity serves as a centralized resource for patients and healthcare providers, uniquely focusing on animal-derived ingredients in medications and helping individuals find suitable options for various allergies (e.g. Alpha-gal Syndrome ). By partnering with the pharmaceutical industry and collaborating with retail pharmacies and hospitals, we enhance transparency and improve patient safety. Our research and regulatory efforts raise awareness about the challenges faced by those with dietary restrictions, advocating for better practices within the industry. Through these initiatives, Pill Clarity empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health, showcasing the vital role pharmacists play in navigating medication choices. • Embracing Patient Safety: Pill Clarity Collaborates with Claremore Indian Hospital Pharmacy

We are excited to share that Pill Clarity has entered a collaboration with Claremore Indian Hospital Pharmacy to enhance awareness of Alpha-gal Syndrome and highlight the importance of animal-free medications! About Claremore Indian Hospital Pharmacy Claremore Indian Hospital , a government-operated facility under the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Indian Health Service (IHS), is a beacon of healthcare excellence located in Claremore, Oklahoma. Serving twelve counties across 7,750 square miles, the hospital caters to over fifty-two thousand patients from diverse tribal backgrounds. Renowned for its comprehensive services, the hospital offers both inpatient and outpatient care through nine specialized clinical services, consistently delivering top-tier healthcare with unwavering dedication. Importance of this Collaboration The CDC estimates 450,000 Americans as having Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) with the highest prevalence of suspected cases being in parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware. The Claremore Indian Hospital falls right within this high prevalence zone of AGS, thus establishing this healthsystem as the leading first-line responder for alpha-gal patients in Oklahoma (see figure below). Oklahomans are at the greatest risk of tick-borne illnesses between May to August when ticks are most active. Every year, many Oklahomans die of tick-borne illnesses while many others become hospitalized. The only real solution for AGS is an alpha-gal avoidance diet. Avoidance of animal-derived ingredients in food, medications and over-the-counter products. Unfortunately, this poses a challenge as 3 out of 4 medications contain animal-derived ingredients with 75% of AGS patients having reacted to these ingredients in health products and 50% of them have suffered anaphylactic reactions due to these ingredients. Additionally, 92% of alpha-gal patients have needed to adjust their medications due to their diagnosis, underscoring its profound impact on their daily lives and healthcare management. This collaboration promises to enhance patient safety and promote ingredient transparency. AGS awareness is on the rise in Oklahoma, with stories making headlines across various news outlets. Coverage by the Oklahoma State University Extension and events like the past workshop hosted by the Cherokee County Oklahoma State University Extension Office on Dec. 20, 2023, titled “What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome? The Mammalian Meat Allergy,” are driving this momentum. However, finding reliable information on Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) can be a challenge, particularly since it hasn't yet made it onto all government databases. For example, AGS is still not listed among the tick-borne illnesses on the Oklahoma State Department of Health website . To address this critical information gap, the collaboration between Pill Clarity and the Claremore Indian Hospital aims to enhance AGS awareness and education. This partnership is a significant step toward making essential AGS information more accessible to both patients and healthcare providers in Oklahoma and beyond, especially considering the CDC states that currently only 5% of healthcare providers feel comfortable diagnosing AGS and managing AGS symptoms. Captain Cindy Gillis, Director of Claremore Indian Health Pharmacy, further emphasizes the importance of this collaboration:  "We serve an underserved population where AGS is increasingly prevalent. With better access to AGS resources, we can ensure the safety of our patients. AGS is often overlooked in healthcare, and we are committed to helping patients identify medications that may pose risks. Pill Clarity provides invaluable support for patients and providers navigating AGS." Pill Clarity is a national leader in animal-free medications. We provide a service that will guide the identification of medications most suitable for patients with alpha-gal syndrome. As an example, Pill Clarity was contacted for 37 medications for one patient and we were able to identify animal-free medications in under 30 minutes; a task that could normally take days of research. Within a hospital setting however, days might not be available. In an acute care setting, time is of the essence, and a delay in care could have disastrous consequences for a patient. This collaboration between Pill Clarity and Claremore Indian hospital “aims to personalize patient care and optimize patient safety,”  said Dr. Farron Sheffield of Claremore Indian Hospital Pharmacy. This initiative is particularly crucial for those with Alpha-gal Syndrome, specific excipient or ingredient allergies, or due to personal preferences, whether religious or dietary. This partnership highlights the critical importance of medication transparency and the impact of animal-free alternatives for patients with specific health needs or dietary preferences. As Alpha-gal Syndrome diagnoses rise, our commitment to advocacy and innovative solutions remains unwavering. Pill Clarity is proud to pioneer this initiative, aiming to expand its impact on healthcare systems nationwide. Curious about how a collaboration could benefit your healthcare facility? • Animal-Free vs. Animal-Derived Ingredients

The vast majority of medications on the market have excipients that cannot be considered animal-free. For example, lactose is one such ingredient that can be found in several different kinds of capsules or tablets. Additionally, compounds like magnesium stearate, commonly used as a lubricant in pharmaceuticals, can be derived from either plants or animals, yet transparency regarding its source is not common practice in the pharmaceutical industry. However, there are alternatives available that can supplement these ingredients and make these medications more inclusive for patients who do not consume products with animal-derived ingredients (e.g. vegans, individuals with religious preferences, or those with Alpha-gal Syndrome). What are common animal-derived ingredients and their animal-free alternatives? In October 2022, a state-of-the-art review examined the demand for medications free from animal-derived ingredients. It found this demand extends beyond vegans and vegetarians, encompassing various dietary restrictions. It also showed how the 13 most commonly used animal-derived ingredients in medications has a plant-based or synthetic alternative available. Why aren't animal-free alternatives always used? While there are alternatives to non-animal ingredients, switching to animal-free options would also require changes in manufacturing, so many companies stick with what they know. Availability is also an issue; materials like carrageenan and alginate from seaweed, used in vegan capsules, require a lot of resources to produce, leading companies to prefer readily available options like gelatin. Sometimes, cost can also be a factor. For example, although mannitol can replace lactose, lactose is cheaper. How can we push for more animal-free options? While altering medication formulations might complicate manufacturing, advocating for transparency is crucial for consumers to understand what goes into their medications. Several initiatives are underway to promote ingredient transparency, including the American Medical Association's policy urging manufacturers to disclose animal-derived ingredients in health products, the ADINA Act which calls for disclosure of all 9 allergens and gluten in health products, and Pill Clarity's Citizen Petition filed with the FDA to clearly label ingredient sources in health products. These efforts aim to empower consumers with information about their health choices. Conclusion In conclusion, while animal-derived ingredients in medications present challenges for those with dietary restrictions or certain allergies, alternatives exist. The problem is, they're not always used because they can be more expensive or harder to get. Initiatives promoting ingredient transparency are steps toward empowering consumers. By supporting these efforts, we can make sure everyone has access to medications that fit their lifestyle and beliefs creating a safer, kinder, and more inclusive world . • Evoke Skincare: Certified Animal-Free!

"It's like vitamins, but for your skin." Evoke Skincare was founded in 2022 with a mission to creating products that are good for your skin and the planet. We have certified four Evoke skincare products- Elevated Vitamin C Serum , Timeless Serum , Firm Skin Serum , and Bare Face Cleanser . We had a conversation with the founder, Valerie Contreras, to give you the full inside story of Evoke! Tell me more about the journey that led to launching Evoke. My journey to launching Evoke was a very eye-opening journey; it all started in my later teens and in my 20s when I struggled with eczema, psoriasis, random flaking of my skin, and a lot of acne. I went to countless dermatologists and tried countless products, I even changed my diet for a full clean diet and nothing seemed to ever work, and always found myself back at square one. I would hide at home if my skin was really bad and avoided people as much as I could. I started getting frustrated with my skin and sad about the fact that my face was always breaking out, red and flaky. One day out of my frustration I started researching and researching about my skin problems and suddenly I found myself learning about skincare ingredients which took me down a rabbit hole. I found that Europe has banned more than 1,500 skincare ingredients while in the U.S. we have banned around 70 skincare ingredients. I learned most skincare products are actually full of chemicals that are not supposed to be in our skin or bodies. These chemicals actually may solve problem A but will create problems B, C, and D. That's why people will be buying and buying new skincare products over and over to solve their skin problems, but they just seem to never end. I couldn't believe how the industry was allowing these toxic ingredients in our skin so I decided to create a brand that was fully organic and free from toxic chemicals. I've always believed the solution is already provided by nature most of the time. Just like junk food harms the body, junk chemicals harm the skin. I use these products myself every day and they basically healed my skin, and other people's skin as well which makes me very happy! How was the process of creating the products? Are they locally made? The process took about 2 and a half years, working with a dermatologist and an environmentally friendly skincare lab. First, we started thinking about the purpose of the product and then researched the best natural ingredients that will drive that purpose. One example is our Bare Face Cleanser: we were wanting to create a cleanser that will level your skin pH levels because when your skin pH is balanced your skin cells tend to function properly, and when they function properly, fewer skin problems will exist. The main ingredient for the Bare Face Cleanser is "Active Pomegranate Enzymes" & MSM "(Sulfur from plants)" These two main ingredients aid to balance the skin's pH levels and restore damaged tissue. Throughout this process, we also kept in mind that all of our products are cruelty-free, vegan, and just animal-free which tends to make the formulation more tedious but not impossible. That's why getting certified animal-free was important to us. Evoke products are made locally in Oregon, U.S. Are you planning to add any more products? We do have a few new incoming products in store for 2023, to be expected around May. We are very excited about these new products, I'll give you a hint, thick formulas that can stay for longer than 10 minutes on your skin, and so much more. But in general, we do look forward to creating more products to accommodate a wide variety of different skin types and needs. When you're not working on Evoke, what do you like to do for fun? In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, I like to take my dogs to a big open space and throw the ball, I also enjoy taking ballet lessons, and baking some delicious cakes. I have such a sweet tooth. Learn more about each of their products below: Welcome to the Certified Animal-Free family, Evoke Skincare !
